すき(suki, 好き) in Japanese means to like something. To greater
emphasize the love for something, だいすき (daisuki, 大好き) is used. The kanji “大” is used when a feeling is strong towards
something, such as how a young child would say “キャンディーが大好きです!” which means “I love candies!”

As opposed to すき, きらい (kirai, 嫌い) is used to describe a feeling of dislike towards something. Even
though the expression だいきらい (daikirai, 大嫌い) can be used to depict
hatred, it’s not often used by the polite Japanese people.

New Westminster Secondary School is currently
one of the largest high schools in B.C. Unlike Japanese high schools which are
separated into Junior high schoolちゅうがっこう(chyuugakkou, 中学校, grades 7-9), and senior high school こうこう(koukou, 高校, grades 10-12), students from
grade 8 – 12 are enrolled. Many clubs
and activities are available to all students attending the school, such as アニメクラブ (anime kurabu, anime club), and サッカークラブ(sakka-kurabu, soccer team). NWSS also
offers many language courses such as にほんご (nihongo, 日本語)!
