さしみ (sashimi, 刺身) is a traditional Japanese dish found all over the world. Meaning pierced body (刺し= pierced; = body), it consists of a great variety of fresh seafood being eaten raw. In regards to the safety of eating raw food, many restaurants freeze the さしみ in a temperature of -35C for 15 hours. It is often accompanied by soysauce and wasabi (a strong-tasting spice which is also used to further kill bacteria that might be present in the food).

ケーキ (ke-ki) is a direct translation of its English counterpart: cake. Made from flour and eggs, and often other dairy products, cakes are sweet in taste. Often used in special occasions such as birthdays and weddings, cakes are also served as desserts in many Japanese restaurants. Some common flavours of cakes adored by the Japanese are まっちゃ (maccha, 抹茶, green tea) and チョコレート (chyokore-to, chocolate).

クリスマス (kurisumasu, Christmas) is celebrated in Japan as well. Many beautiful decorations flourish along the busy streets during the season, and the atmosphere is a warm white as snow falls during winter. Unlike Canada, many shops remain open on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. This fact invites families, friends, and lovers to walk along the snow-covered sidewalks and enjoy the warmth instead of staying home.

おんがく (ongaku, 音楽) means music. Music makes the world go around! Many Japanese children are brought up in families where parents expect their children to be able to play instruments, such as the violin and the piano. Such practices train the ears of the children and their eye-to-hand cooperation, as well as smoothening out hand/finger movements. Nowadays, music is a huge, huge, hobby to many people all around the world. Some famous singers in Japan are 宇多田ひかる (Utada Hikaru), and Orange Range.
