What is a stopper?
A stopper is the
player right in front of the sweeper. The stopper is
responsible for either the first forward down field
or the first midfielder,depending on the way the team
plays.
What
is a forward?
Forwards are the
players who start off closest to the goal that the
team is attacking. Forwards are responsible for both
scoring and assisting others to score.
What
are midfielders?
These are the
players between the forwards and the fullback are the
ones that link the two together. Midfielders play
both offensively and defensively.
What's
a Save?
A save is when a
keeper prevents a ball from going into the goal. This
refers only to a ball shot by the opposing team that
would have gone into the goal if not for the keeper.
What
is a 50/50 Ball?
A loose ball that
can be won by either team.
What
is marking?
To match up
gainst a player of the other team and to take the
responsibility to defend against any attacks by this
player. You want to stop this player from receiving
the ball, from passing the ball, and from shooting
into your goal.
What
is a chip?
A soft pass that
leaves the ground and "floats" to an
intended target. This is accomplished by striking the
lower half of the ball which causes the ball to
elevate.
What
is the far post?
This is the goal
post that is the furthest from the ball at any given
time.
What is the ref signaling?
The ref is
signaling that a player caused a serious foul. That
player will be removed from the playing field for the
rest of the game.
What
is the pitch?
The pitch is the
official name of the playing field in soccer
language.
What
is a sweeper?
The player who
plays furthest back on the field, just in front of
the keeper. The sweeper doesn't have any marking
responsibilities but is responsible for helping
others out defensively when they have lost their
mark.
What
is a starter?
Everyone who
comes to the game in uniform is a starter. Some
player start on the field, where they work together
to keep possession of the ball and to score. Other
players start on the bench, where they are the first
to understand the weaknesses and playing style of the
opposing team. Starters on the bench have the
advantage of getting the coach's perspective of the
game before they play.
