| Why are you so negative about religion? Related question: Why do you hate God? "The vast majority of the country subscribes to christianity and a portion of that majority are actively attempting to insert the rules of the christian religion into law and force all people in the US to follow the christian rules. You can imagine living in China 20 yrs ago and being told that praying to god is something for the government to prosecute you with - seems pretty scary right? Well, that is what it looks like the Republican majority is attempting to do with the US, only with christianity as the rule of law. So we here in the atheist boards use this space to vent our frustrations in an environment that we know is accepting of our non-belief. ." --EHC23 6/10/05 Religion and belief in the xian god come up everyday-- even in some of the most inane things. For those of us who don't believe, it gets to the point of being overwhelmingly ridiculous and hard to take. Here, we are able to vent our frustrations and question the things we see/hear without offending anyone or stepping on any toes. This is our safe haven from the "what year do you live in if you don't believe in god", the "if you don't believe in god, what do you think happens when you die", and the many other questions we are repeatedly asked out of some sense of curiosity and almost "freak show" mentality (on the part of some).jazmommy 7/23/03 I get frustrated with people trying to make me have a religion. It's nice to know that there are other people out there going through the same crap. I can come here and not have to worry that I might say something to offend anyone. I can tell them for instance that I am a unwed mother of one with no religious belief and no desire to have one and I won't be chastised for it. They don't tell me to pray when I have problems and they don't tell me to read the bible or go to church to find answers. They offer their true kindness and goodness of heart, not just some facade put on to please a god. They are good for the sake of being good.-- itsagirl-born!5/24 7/29/03 "I think some of that comes from the fact that we live in a Christian society where those beliefs are constantly pushed on us by friends, strangers, neighbors and even our own government. Sometimes even by random posters who come wandering over to a board designed specifically for people who do not believe in god or who are uncertain about the existance of a diety." -- Clair704 6/16/05 "Perhaps there is such a feeling of animosity to xtians because some evangelists continue to shove your god and bible down the throats of those who think the bible is a myth and god is a figment of your delusional imagination. While asking for money to build bigger places to worship, yet the pastors do tend to have expensive clothes, cars, houses etc. Sounds corrupt to me." -- thorlina 6/16/2005 "This and RDB is quite honestly the only place that I can express my disdain for organized religion in general and Xianity in particular. I don't like Xianity and I feel it's harmful. That is how I feel. I know about 85% of the country disagrees with me and most of the time I make nice out of respect for people I like and care about. I don't have to do that here. The other thing that I think deserves a mention is that I think many Xians think non-believers are unhappy and "searching" for something. They will come to this board and read something negative and in some weird way it validates what they've been told: "Atheists are people who are mad at God, have no peace and live lives of quiet desperation" You project that on this board so you can think to yourself: "It's so negative because they don't have the Holy Spicket and the Peace of the Lard, thank you Jesus for saving me so I don't have to be like that." All the while, ignoring the complete pettiness, negativity, judgement and everything else that goes on a many of the xian boards." --2manylegos 6/10/05 "Normally we get this "why are you so hostile" question only once a month... Just so you know, I'm hostile to all religions, not just christianity. However, most of the people I encounter are christians, so I am hostile to them more than other people as I see less muslims, jews, hindus, buddhists, etc. And I didn't even have a bad experience with religion, I just saw that religion has historically led to unimaginable suffering." -- EHC23 6/16/05 "Yes I do like to come here and generally vent about how I feel about christianity sometimes. I feel that I am entitiled to this, this is an A/A board after all. I strive on a daily basis to be nice, polite, respectful (not fake!!!) to those around me and I think that everyone needs to blow off a little steam sometimes. I sure do like a place I can come and do that. Imagine if some of these topics were on our birth boards........:) So I am sorry whether religious or not if you seem to be disappointed with this board. Would be great if you could stick around and provide your honest open response to issues which I hope you will find we always try to be reseptive and respectful of....Easy to see what you want to see but I think if you really look we have all sorts of problems yes a lot dealing with christianity (hey look where you are!!) but a lot are just generally shootin the breeze and having a good time as well." --zoogal2356 6/10/05 "I really would not give a rat's behind about Christianity or Christians, in general, Live and Let Live, but now that they are being so blatant about influencing politics and laws of land, and using their own interpretations of the bible to try to control others lives? That is why it gets me so upset and why I take the time to understand it ... because it affects our lives/families/government ... I wish it didn't, but it does. Also, I like to the rattle other people's cages a little, just in hopes that it makes them think more about their belief system and that some need to be reminded, it's a BIG world out there and not everyone believes the same thing (which really is OK). I want people (including myself) to think about why we believe a certain way, to really look at their beliefs (are they believing that way only because that's the way they think everyone else does? or because they think there is no other way?)." --ZoeOsMOM 7/11/05 |
