Ethics
"Knowledge of morality goes beyond simply knowing the norms or ethical codes of the discipline. It includes all voluntary actions that are deliberate and subject to the judgnent of right and wrong - including judgments of moral value in relation to motives, intentions, and traits of character." Carper (1978)
Ethics encompasses the values, virtues and principles upon which the quality of human life and human action is determined.
Traditionally, ethics in nursing followed the biomedical model which focuses on the application of principles to ethical dilemmas.
Within the collaborative nursing curriculum, ethics integrates other models of ethical practice such as the ethics of care and feminist ethics.
In particular the ethics of care encompasses the moral imperative to act justly and ethically. In this sense, the locus of ethical thought is the quality of relationship rather than the quality of judgments or acts.
