"Man, he was really cute too. It's a shame he's a controlling bastard." Belle said to me as we walked through the mall. "Oh yeah, a damn shame." She smiled and tried to hold all of the bags which were getting to numerous to count. "Hey, could you hold some of these?" "Sure." I said taking a few. "Thanks so much." "You know, maybe you should stop for now." "I don't ever want to hear you say that again. I will never stop shopping." I smiled. "Just trying to help you with the bag situation." "I'll deal." "Whatever." "So, now that you're single again, what are you going to do?" I sighed. "Enjoy the moment." "I think you should call that Mitch guy. From what you've told me he's really good in bed." "And he was a real ass the last time I talked to him!" "You just dumped him. Of course he'd be a little upset." "I don't know. Maybe I will. I doubt he'd take me back though." "Don't be silly, of course he will." I looked down at the ground. "Maybe." "Umm, Kara?" "Yeah?" "Is that Bill?" I looked up and saw Bill standing in a corner watching us. I grabbed her arm and pulled her into the nearest store. "Is he stalking you?" Belle asked. "No, he'd have to follow me all the time to do that." "Umm-" "I've only seen him doing it once! God, we only broke up two days ago." "Do you think you should call someone?" "No.... If he threatens me I will." "Why wait for him to?" "He wouldn't hurt me." She snorted. "Well he sure isn't having a problem following you around." "Come on, we're leaving." I said dragging her away.
"Are you sure you don't want me to stay?" Belle asked. "I'll be fine. Don't worry about it." She walked to my front door and turned around. "If he comes by call the police. And don't hesitate." "I won't. Bye." "Bye." She walked out and I locked the door. I walked to my couch and sat down. Nefi jumped into my lap and I smiled. "I sure am glad you're here. Something to calm my nerves." My phone rang and I answered it without looking at the call id. "Hello?" "Kara, that car you were telling me about is parked outside our house." Mary said. "How close?" "Across the street." "Oh, thanks. Um, I'll call someone." "Ok. Bye." "Bye." I hung up and walked to the window to see Bill's car parked across the street. "Shit. What is he doing?"
An hour later Bill was still parked outside and I was starting to freak out. "I'll call someone and talk to them. That should make me feel better." I picked up the phone and remembered what Belle told me. I dialed Mitch's number. "Hello?" "Mitch?" "Kara? Why are you calling?" "Well... I'm kinda scared and I wanted someone to talk to." "Scared?" "Bill is stalking me." "What? Why would he have to do that?" "I broke up with him." "You did?" "Yeah." "Well.... Out of all the people you could have called, why did you call me?" "Belle told me I should." "Who's Belle?" "My friend. I told her what happened with us and she told me I should call." He snorted. "Nice you call now, when your boyfriend's stalking you." "He's not my boyfriend, and stop being an ass." "I can't believe you called me. I think it's great that you can forget everything that happened so quickly. Or did you forget?" I rolled my eyes. "No. Mitch, I'm being serious. I'm scared." He sighed. "I'll be there in a minute."
Mitch knocked on my door ten minutes later. I let him in and quickly locked the door. "Did you ever think to call the police?" "Uh, no." He smiled. "Why doesn't that surprise me?" "Please don't joke about this, I'm really scared." He put his arm around my shoulder and led me to the couch. "Sit down. Everything's going to be ok. I'm here, you don't have to worry." I smiled and laid my head on his shoulder. "So, what have you been up to lately?" I asked. He smiled. "Well, I got home, slept, ate, and looked at dirty magazines thinking of you." I sat up. "What?" He smiled. "You asked." I smiled lightly. "I wasn't expecting that answer though." He ran his fingers through my hair. "I shouldn't be here. You do realize that, don't you?" I sighed. "Yeah. But I want you here." "Why?" "I want you to protect me from Bill... And I really miss you." "You really have some problems. You can never make up your mind. You never have I suppose." "I know. But I know what I want now. Please don't hate me for what I did to you. I'm sorry." He smiled and kissed me on the cheek. "What if I'm not going to be that easy? What if I don't come back to you?" "Fine. I guess those magazines are better than the real thing." He sat still for a few moments then leaned in and roughly kissed me. "That's what I thought." I whispered.
I slowly walked to my room with Mitch kissing me. He pushed me into the room and closed the door behind him. "I've spent every night dreaming of this." he whispered kissing me and laying me onto the bed. "Me too." I said closing my eyes. He got down on top of me and I heard glass break down the hall. My eyes shot open and Mitch's head flung towards the door. "Why didn't you call the police?" he asked sitting up. "You've got to have a weapon around here somewhere." he said looking around my room. I opened the drawer to my nightstand and pulled out mase. "You've got to be kidding me." he said raising his eyebrow. I began to pick up the bat next to my bed when I heard Nefi squeal. I picked it up and ran into the living room to see Bill choking her. "Let go of her you asshole!" I yelled slamming the bat onto his head as hard as I could. He slumped to the ground and Nefi ran out of the room. Mitch ran up to me. "Nice hit."
I sat on my couch and watched the police take Bill away. Mitch sat down next to me and put his arm across my shoulders. "He's gone now. It's ok." I groaned and rolled my eyes. "Thanks for the reassurance." I mumbled. He smiled. "Umm, you know what? I should be going." "What? Why?" "Because I shouldn't have been here in the first place." he said standing up. I jumped up and grabbed his arm. "You can't just leave me. We were in the middle of something." He smiled and pulled my hand off him. "Sorry, but I shouldn't be with you. Bye Kara, and please, don't call me." He turned around and walked out of my house; out of my life.
There's something about two men leaving a woman's life at one time that will give her mental problems and screw her over for life. I could have dealt with Bill, hell, I did deal with Bill, but I couldn't deal with Mitch leaving me again. Well, I guess technically I left him the first time, but I didn't want to. Somehow Bill manages to ruin everything. Damn him. It's been two weeks now and every fiber of my being burns to speak to Mitch again, but I can't. He told me not to call. I should, but I doubt he would speak to me, just hang up as soon as he heard my voice. Why doesn't he understand that I need him?
"Get over it! There's a world full of men who would kill to even touch you. Give one of them a call." Belle said as she, Tam, and I sat in my living room discussing my love life. "Belle, I don't care what you say, I'm not going to listen. I want Mitch, not anyone else." She groaned. "Do you have any idea how pathetic you sound? A man should never do this to a woman." "Do what?" "You've fallen completely in love with him, and he played you." "I'm not in love. Just really attached." Tam laughed. "That's great, I've never heard it called that before." "Shut up." I said smiling and slapping her on the arm. "Listen girl, you need to get some reality slapped into you. He's not coming back, deal with it." "No." "Umm, Kara, you know I hate to agree with Belle, but I'm going to have to now. You do need to get over him." "I can't believe this, I really can't believe this." I said throwing my arms into the air. "I know! Let's set you up on a date with someone. I know the perfect guy." Tam said winking. "Oh no, there's no way in hell." Belle smiled. "I think that's a good idea. Let's get to work Tam." Belle said jumping up and running away with Tam. "I'm not going on a blind date!"
"You're a lot more beautiful in person than on tv." Nate said. I sat in the expensive restaurant suppressing the urge to get up and leave this date Tam and Belle set up for me. After hours of arguing I gave in. They always get things their way. It drives me insane. I need to learn how to say no and stick with it. The guy they stuck me with is even worse than the whole date. He can't get off the fact that I'm Kara Harper. I want to slap him. "Do you want some dessert?" he asked me. I smiled politely. "No thank you." "Are you sure? I don't mind the money, really. It's not a big thing to me, you know how it is." he said getting out his wallet and looking at the bill. I rolled my eyes. You have got to be kidding me. He paid and got up to pull out my chair. I smiled as he offered his hand to pull me up. "Thank you."
We got into his car and he drove me home. I looked out the window wishing he would drive faster. Please, get me home and get me home now. I want this date from hell to end. We pulled into my drive way and he got out to open my door for me. I got out and he walked me to the front door. I reached into my purse for my keys and unlocked the front door. I turned around to see him in my face. "I had a really good time tonight." he whispered. I smiled nervously. "Uh, yeah." "Good night." he said leaning in to kiss me. I opened the door and dove in. "Night!" I said closing the door in his face. "Thank God." I said heaving a sigh of relief. My phone rang a few minutes later and I picked it up. "Hello?" "Kara! How did it go?" Tam asked. "If you ever, ever, do that to me again, I will chop your head off and send it to your mother." "It was that bad?" "You don't even know." "Sorry, I thought you two would get along." "Maybe we would have if he'd shut up about money for more than two seconds." "Sorry."
I lay awake in my bed staring at the ceiling. I should get over him. We weren't even in a relationship. I see no reason to be this attached. I sighed. But I am. I rolled over and closed my eyes. Lately my insomnia has come back. I don't think it was the tour that did it to me, I think it was men. Damn them, damn them all to hell. Nefi rolled over onto her back and snorted. I smiled when the phone rang. "Hello?" "Hi, how are you?" "Who in the hell is this and why are you calling this late?" "It's Nate and it isn't late for me. I figured you'd be awake." "Well I'm trying to go to sleep. Bye." "Wait! Um, I was wandering if you would like to go out again tomorrow night." I sat up and shifted uncomfortably. "Uh, I can't." "Ok. What about that day after tomorrow?" "No, I can't then either. And I can't ever. So, please don't call back." I hung up and fell onto the bed. "I wasn't too mean, was I?" I asked Nefi. She looked at me and then rolled over. I smiled. "Yeah, I thought so."
"That's it! I give up!" I yelled storming into Belle's living room. She looked up from her magazine and raised her eyebrow. "Giving up on what?" she asked. "Men. All of them. It's pointless, absolutely pointless! I'm never going to look at one again!" She smiled. "I doubt that will last." she said looking back at her magazine. I sat down next to her and pulled the magazine away. "I'm being serious! Nate called me last night when I was trying to sleep, and he asked me out!" "What did you say?" "I told him no and never to call me back again." "Bitch much?" I shook my head and waved my hands in the air. "So I've decided I give up on men! Screw Bill, screw Mitch, and screw Nate!" I raised my head to the ceiling. "Never again! I will never be with another man for the rest of my life!" "I think you're getting a little carried away. Just think about what you're saying." "I am!" "Ok ok. So, let me get this straight, you're never going to look at, talk to, kiss, or have sex with another man for the rest of your life?" "Yes." "Then how do you plan on bearing children?" "Artificial insemination." She put her hands on my cheeks and stared into my eyes. "You've completely gone off the deep end. Get a grip!" she said shaking my head. "No, I have gotten a grip, and this is what I've decided to do. So, this is my vow to you: never again will I be involved with another man, and never again will they fuck with my head."
"A new look for your new lifestyle. It all makes perfect sense." Tam said as we stood in the hair dye section of a store. "Exactly. So, I was thinking about going back to my natural blonde and doing some different color tips. Black?" "No." she said looking through all the different colors. She picked up a box, looked at me, and put it back on the shelf. "What color was that?" I asked. "Red, but you wouldn't look good with red." She continued to browse through the colors until she screamed and pulled one out. "It's perfect! Blue! It would look so great on you!" I took the box and stared at it for a moment. I looked up and smiled. "I love it!" She jumped up and down. "Yippie! Come on, let's go home and dye your hair!"
Tam stood over me with gloves on her hands and holding a bottle of hair dye. "So, what do I do? Come on, hurry up!" she said tapping her foot on the floor. "Hold on! Geeze, I can't read that fast." I said looking over the instructions. "Ok. You supposed to generously apply it to the tips of the hair, at a length determined by the recipient." I looked up at her and she shrugged her shoulders. "So, how much do you want?" "Umm, how about three inches?" She smiled and shook the bottle. "Alright, let's do this." An hour later I stepped out of the bathroom after I took a shower and dried my hair. "Well, how does it look?" I asked shaking my head. Tam jumped up and clapped. "You look great! It's a damn shame you can't use your sexy good looks on guys." I smiled. "Isn't it though?"
"I know this cute little place in Colorado we can go to. It isn't that expensive and it will give us some time alone with our bestest good friend!" Belle said hugging me. I smiled. "Sounds good to me. I want to get away from here anyway." "I can call and make reservations today, and when I tell them that the famous Kara Harper will be joining me, we'll be able to get a discount and go any time we want to." "Don't use Kara like that." Tam joked. "What are you talking about? That's all she's good for." "Geeze, thanks." "No problem. So, how does next week sound?" "Bad. I still need to do a little last minute shopping and pack and stuff." I said. "Ok then, how about the week after next?" "That's good for me. What about you?" I asked turning to Tam. "Good." "Alright then, I'll call now."
I stood over my suitcase getting a head start on packing. Nefi looked up at me and started whining. "I know baby, I don't want to leave you either, but they don't allow pets in this place. I'm not going to be gone as long as before, so don't worry. Besides, you like Martha! Stop complaining." She turned around and left the room as the phone rang. "Hello?" "Kara, it's me.... Mitch." I stopped packing. "What do you want?" "Uh, I wanted to tell you how much of an idiot I've been and that I'm sorry. I also wanted to know what you're doing tonight." "Boy did you ever pick a wrong time to call begging me to take you back. I've given up on men, and therefore given up on you. So, I'm not doing anything tonight, but I'm not doing anything with you either." "What?! Three weeks ago you were doing everything you could just to get into my pants, and now you're rejecting me?!" "Yes. I'm packing now, so if you don't mind, I'm going to go." "But-" "Bye." I hung up and threw the phone onto the bed. "Leave it to him to do something like this."
Monday morning at four in the morning I stepped outside to see Belle and Tam shoving things into their cars. "Why haven't you all already done this?" I asked getting out my keys. "Because we're not genius' like you." Belle said shoving her shoulder into one of her suitcases. "Well I knew that already." "I don't see why we can't all just ride in one car." Tam said. "Tammy, do you see what you're doing now? How would we fit all of our stuff in one car?" "Oh, right." She closed her trunk and walked to the front. "Come on Belle, we're waiting for you." I said. "Hold on just one more minute. It's not like we're in a hurry to get there anyway." "Don't you even go there. It was your idea to get up this god damn early. It's your own fault you aren't ready. So, I'm leaving now. You'll just have to catch up with us." I said opening my car door and getting inside. "Ok ok, I'm done! Let's go." she mumbled getting into her car.
"When are we going to stop? I'm getting a little tired of driving and I'm hungry." Tam said to me over the phone. "The next exit. Is that ok with you Belle?" I asked. "Yeah. I'm hungry too." We had been driving for ten hours and it was time for a rest stop. An hour ago I called Belle and Tam on three way to get everything together. We still had six more hours until we got to the cabin Belle booked for us. I tried to stop her from making the reservations after I heard we were kicking other people out of the cabin. All this just because I'm famous. But no, Belle wouldn't listen. That's just the kind of heartless bitch she is. So here we are, in the middle of God knows where, looking for the next exit and hoping there's some kind of civilization there. "The next exit is ten damn miles away! And the only thing there is a gas station and a Cracker Barrel!" Tam said. "Of course there's a Cracker Barrel. Humans wouldn't occupy the area if there wasn't a damn Cracker Barrel within a five mile radius." Belle said. "Are we going to stop there?" I asked. "Yeah. It doesn't seem as if there's another stop for quite some time." Belle said. "Ok then. I'll see you guys there." I said hanging up.
We pulled into the Cracker Barrel and got out of our cars, and we were more than ready to stretch out our legs. "Oh my God, I can't feel my butt! I can't feel my butt!" Tam said slapping her butt. I raised my eyebrow and turned around. "Let's go before anyone notices Tam." Belle said walking past me. I followed her and we walked into the restaurant. Belle went up to the hostess and started talking to her. Tam walked up next to me. "Can you feel your butt now?" I asked smiling. "No." she mumbled. She turned her head and her eyes widened. "Oh! Candy!" she said walking away. Belle walked up to me. "Our table will be ready in five minutes. Where's butt girl?" "Over at the candy table, where else?" "Tam, get over here! We're going to eat in a minute." She frowned and slowly walked over to us. "You suck the fun out of everything. You're like a damn Hoover." "I know, but you can have candy after we eat." She crossed her arms and stomped her foot. "Fine."
"Candy is good!" Tam said as she ate a giant ball of chocolate. We walked to our cars to start our trip again. "I'm running out of minutes guys, so only call me if it's really important." Belle said. "Same here. Are you listening Tam?" I asked. "Yeah. You guys don't have minutes, gotcha." Belle rolled her eyes. "Let's go before she goes back inside for more candy." she said getting into her car. "I'll see you guys there I guess." I said getting into mine. "Bye guys!" Tam said getting into hers. I started my car and followed Belle back onto the interstate. Six more hours and I can get out of this damn car. I'm never going to want to drive again.
We pulled up to our cabin and stepped out of the cars. "I can't feel my butt again!" Tam said. "Oh shut up. Let's just get our stuff and get inside. I want to sleep." Belle said. "Sleep?! Screw that, I'm going to eat." Tam said jumping up and down. I looked into the driveway and saw that there were cars still there. "Who's that?" I asked. "Probably the bums who were here. Why haven't they gotten out yet?!" I rolled my eyes and walked to the cabin. "Why couldn't you have waited until they left?" "Because I wanted to come now." "I think Kara has a point." Tam said. "Whatever. It's too late now, they have to leave. So, get your stuff and let's go in." I walked to the door and turned around. "Geeze Belle, you sound really bitchy." I said opening the front door.
