Norwich University Emergency Medical Services, or NUEMS, is Norwich University's Student-Run, Emergencey Medical Service that provides Basic Life Support (BLS) Services to the Norwich campus and its adjacent properties.
NUEMS is made up of students and some NU staff which are certified, either by the State of Vermont Department of Health or the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMTs), as First Responders, EMT-Basics, EMT-Intermediates or First Aid and CPR/AED certified. Only students may run for and be elected to leadership positions within the squad.
NUEMS currently uses Northfield Ambulance Service for all EMS transport to area hospitals and the NU Security Truck to transport students to the NU Infirmary. NUEMS is currently pursuing the purchase of a Polaris or same-type vehicle to better serve the NU Campus and the Corps of Cadets and its Field Exercises. This may take some time however, seeing as the group is completely non-profit.
NUEMS responded to approximately 125+ incidents on the Norwich University property during the 2006-2007 Academic Year. NUEMS is currently dispatched by phone or by radio by the Norwich University Security Office and members respond on foot to calls all over the NU property.
NUEMS is always welcoming new members. To join, stop by at a weekly meeting or contact our Administration Officer for more information. No certifications are necessary to be a member, however, to respond to calls as a Senior Responder, the minimum of a First Responder Certification is needed. NUEMS does offer periodic training for different certification levels throughout the school years. Contact a NUEMS officer for more info about what is currently being offfered. |
