 SOAP BOX DERBY WEIGH-IN TIPS

During the week of June 25th you will be required to bring your car RACE READY to inspection and weigh-in. Again this year, McGill's on Evans Ave. in Valparaiso, has allowed us to use their facility for inspection nights. The schedule is:

STOCK CARS: Monday June 25

SUPER STOCK: Tuesday June 26

**Wednesday will be an extra day if you are unable to attend the other two sessions**

Times for inspections will run from 5 PM to 8 PM. No car will be accepted (in the door) on any evening after 8:00 PM. If you cannot make your assigned evening, please call to arrange a different day.

Typically, weighing and adjusting weights in your car delays the inspection process. Here are a few tips about what is required:

The maximum allowable weight of car and driver is 200# for Stock Cars, 230# for Super Stock Cars. It is to your advantage to be as close to maximum allowable weight for your division.

A differential of 15# is allowed between the front and the rear of your car. One way to estimate this is to use two bathroom scales, one under each front wheel, with the driver in driving position. This can be repeated for the rear wheels. The total weight of your car should not exceed your division maximum, and should not have a difference of more than 15# between the front and rear. For example, in the Stock division, if either front or rear weight is over 107#, or under 93#, you're not legal. Remember to weigh with the wheels on, and driver fully dressed (including shoes, and helmet).

Drivers are required to wear rigid soled shoes. Socks alone or ballet shoes are not allowed. Typically, tennis shoes are worn. Drivers must wear garments to cover their legs entirely to protect from scratches/ scrapes in the car.

Remember to come to the weigh-in with adequate weights and the flexibility to adjust them. Leave room on the front and back weight bolts for weight adjustment. If you weigh one pound overweight, you will have to remove one pound. If all you have are large weights (2#, 3#, and larger), then you may be removing more than you want. This is okay, but you really want to be as close to maximum as possible. Weights will not available at weigh-in, so bring adequate for your needs.

Use only factory drilled holes and approved bolt to fasten weights. All weights must be painted, and marked with their approximate weight. Remember, the weight hold down bolts are in areas that limit the amount of weight that can be placed there. In years past we have allowed a thick steel or lead plate beneath the driver in the seat area. This can be especially handy for our lighter drivers. This plate can be no bigger than 12"x 12", and no thicker than 1 and 1/2", and bolted with 5/16" bolts per rules. The plate cannot touch the sides of the car. Care must be taken to insure that there are no sharp edges on any weights, or bolt/nuts.

Have your car ready for inspection! If you are having problems, call the director before the inspection week and a race official will help you. Remember to be especially careful to check your steering to make sure cables are routed properly. Brake plungers should easily touch the ground when applied.

AFTER INSPECTION AND WEIGH-IN

At inspection/weigh-in each driver will be issued their official race tee shirt. Each driver will be photographed with their car. Photos will be distributed at the awards banquet following the race. All participants will receive a trophy at the awards ceremony at the Moose Lodge immediately following the race. Winners in each division will advance to the national race in Akron, Ohio to be held on July 28th.

After successfully passing inspection, your car will be impounded by race officials. Cars will be stored, and then transported to the race pit area on race day (June 30). The pit area will be fenced off and restricted to drivers, car handlers, and race officials only. No others will be allowed in the pit area.

Parents/Guardians will be responsible for removing their cars from the pit area upon completion of the race. If your driver is eliminated early in the day, you must still wait until the conclusion of the race to take your car. Your car becomes the property of NIDRA from the time it is impounded, until it is released from the pit by a race official. Please respect this.

NO CAR WILL BE RELEASED FROM THE PIT PRIOR TO THE CONCLUSION OF THE RACE.

VOLUNTEER

We expect to have another great day of racing on June 30th. We still need help from parents and friends of our racers. (Anyone have photographic equipment, and/or know how to use it?) Remember that this organization is run by a 100% volunteer force. Some do much more than others BUT EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER. We need some kind of commitment from everyone in order to continue to provide Soap Box Derby in this area. Please contact NIDRA Director if you can help in any way, or if you have questions about constructing your car.
