SOULMATES - PART 5

Pacey had dropped Joey off at Dawson's house telling her that if she needed him he would be there. She glanced apprehensively at the familiar building and decided for once in her life to use the door.

"Dawson."

"Joey. Where were you last night? I woke up and you were gone."

"Dawson we need to talk."

"Okay. So talk."

"Dawson..I have no idea how to say this..how to explain myself. So I think..I think it's just best if I say it and get it over and done with...Dawson I think we should break up."

"Joey? I don't understand where is this coming from? We are happy together. We're soulmates. We belong to each other. You belong to me. Breaking up is impossible."

"But are we Dawson? Are we really?"

Dawson continued talking ignoring Joey's words. "Don't tell me this is about you finding yourself again. 'Cos that is just a..."

"What is it?? Tell me Dawson. What do you think about me needing to find myself?" The fire within Joey had finally returned.

"Truthfully it is a load of crap. A huge bundle of bull s/hit!"

"Thank you for finally telling me the truth. But no, this isn't about me finding myself. This is about me needing to be myself, away from you. You're suffocating me Dawson. I'm dying here. I'm losing myself within you."

"But isn't that what being a soulmate is all about? Finding your other half and becoming complete because of it. Of course you lose some of yourself in the process. But soulmates is about the two becoming one. A symbiosis between you and me."

"What?!? Dawson and Dawson's shadow."

"You know it's not like that Joey."

"Maybe, maybe not. But the thing is you still haven't answered my question. Are we really soulmates? And more than that..I'm not sure if I really believe in soulmates. If I truly ever did."

Dawson stared at Joey aghast. As if she had just committed the highest form of blasphemy known to humankind.

"You don't mean that. You don't."

"But I do Dawson. I really do."

"Fine you do. We'll talk later when you've calmed down."

"Dawson I am calm. And rational. And I want to talk now."

But Dawson had already shut off. The look on his face was one that clearly showed that this discussion was over and Joey could go ahead and talk as much as she wanted but not a single word would penetrate through Dawson's thick skull.
