Private Pilot License

What privledges do I have after obtaining a private license?
After completion of your private pilot training and you are issued your private pilot license, you are able to carry passengers, fly anywhere in the U.S. day or night, in fair weather, in light single engine aircraft.

How long does it take to complete the training?
If you fly 3 lessons each week and study for the written test in between, you can complete your training as quickly as in 10 - 12 weeks!  We can schedule all of your lessons from day 1 and if you stick to the schedule and make up the bad weather days, you'll finish on time!

If a more relaxed or flexible schedule fits your availability better, that is OK, and there is no FAA requirement of how quickly you must complete your training.   Average students on a casual flying schedule usually are able to finish in about 6 months.

Am I eligible to begin training for a private license?
Must be 17 years old by completion of the final practical test
Be able to read, speak, write and understand English
Be able to provide proof of US citizenship or TSA approval
Pass an FAA 3rd class medical (a basic physical)

What requirements must be completed to get a private license?
FAA minimum requirements (summary of the rules)
40 hours total flight time that includes
20 hours of dual instruction flying that includes

Training in all of the required areas of operation in the PTS
                                     3 hours of night training
3 hours of simulated instrument flying

A 3 hour cross country flight
3 hours within 60 days before your test

10 hours of solo flying that includes

5 hours of qualified cross country

3 takeoffs and landings at a control towered airport

Pass a FAA written test
Pass a FAA practical test and checkride

Most Private Pilot students require more than the 40 hours total flight time minimum to complete these requirements, and demonstrate profeciency to a level to pass the test.  Spending time in training over this minimum in no way counts against you, but it costs more.   Every student pilot progresses differently in their learning.  However, common controlable factors that cause un-necessary increase in the amount of time spent over the 40 hour minimum include:
Training less than twice a week
Not studying reading material between lessons
Taking an extended break (weeks off) during training
Evening and weekend training schedules are available!
