The University of Illinois Chapter of NOMAS was founded in 1978 by former student and professor Ernest Clay.  Mr. Clay was also one of the co-founders of I-NOMA, the Illinois Chapter of the national Organization of Minority Architects, at the state level.  He attended the University of Illinois during the turbulent 1960's and helped with Project 500, an effort to recruit 500 black students to attend the university on 1964.  He overcame tremendous odds to become a distinguished architect and professor at the University of Illinois School of Architecture.  It is out of this spirit and struggle that this Chapter of NOMAS was born.
