The bus ride seemed to go on forever. Every few hours the bus would stop at the gas station to fuel up and to let the few passengers get out and stretch, eat, or buy some cheesey souvenirs. Helena never moved from her seat, not even to use the restroom, even though her bladder seemed like it was going to burst.
Helena was going to visit her old hometown. The one she had left years ago to escape the dangers she had known since she was a child. She never wanted to return, but one of her girlfriends was getting married and she couldn't miss it. Long ago they had made a pact to see each other as often as possible, and now ten years had passed and Helena couldn't even remember exactly what her friend looked like, let alone what she could possibly look like now.
As the bus roared closer to the  bus stop, Helena clutched her suitcase nervously and turned to look out the rear window. No one had followed her. Good.
For as long as Helena could remember, there was always someone.... something.... following her. She didn't know what it was, or who it was, or why it would be following her. But she knew it was there. Always. That's why she never dreamed of coming back home, where this thing haunted her so.
When the bus doors opened, the passengers let out a long sigh of relief. It had been about two hours since the last stop, and one boy who had bought a large soda and had finished drinking it ran down the aisle to find the nearest restroom.
Helena was the last to step off the bus after an elderly couple who were muttering to eachother.
"I told you we should have flown."
"Hush, you old poop!"
She smiled to herself and stepped out into the hot sun. It was a small hick town, where everything was walking distance from everything else. The only time you needed a car was to get to the hospital, or to go out of town. Helena hadn't had a car when she left, so she ended up hitching rides until she felt a safe distance from the town.
And now she was back and looking around the small crowd of people for the first familiar face. Her stomach churned with nervousness, and then she spotted her.
Happiness bubbled inside of her suddenly as she ran towards her long lost friend. She could almost cry.
