Migrant Dies In Police Custody

Modesto, California
Early Saturday morning, the body of immigrant Manuel Diego was found lifeless in a cell in the
Stanislaus County jail. He apparently starved to death and was discovered between rounds of
interrogation about a case involving area man Charles de Geraint. In a statement released by a
Modesto Police spokesman, it was revealed that they had simply forgotten about the care of their
charge. "He just kept giving us information and saying nice things about Geraint. I guess we
were too busy trying to record everything and just forgot to feed him". So far, noone has taken
responsibility for the tragic oversight and no charges have been filed, although at the request
of the INS an investigation is being conducted.
Ironically, Diego is not the only casualty in this battle against unfair labour practices. His
wife and eight children also seem to have starved to death. This fact came to light when
authorities attempted to contact his next of kin after the realisation of his untimely demise.
It would seem that Diego's income from Geraint was the only thing keeping them from destitution.
Mr. Geraint publicly blamed Modesto Police and the INS for all ten deaths, prompting a severe
beating by members of both agencies and another arrest.
