more pics of Ko Phuket...
Wat Chalong near Phuket City.  It is the largest & most important temple on the island.  In the foreground is the Ordination Hall where young novices are initiated.  No women are allowed in side...
Side view of the Ordination Hall.
Not everyone on Phuket gets to enjoy the beach...the water buffaloes in Thailand are still the major farming equipment in many parts of the country.  The King of Thailand (I read in an article) believes that the animals are better than tractors because they don't need gasoline and they are more efficient in the long run than tractors.  He also thinks that the water buffalo is more eco-friendly than a large farm machine.  A program in Thailand loans water buffaloes out to farmers who are too poor to afford them on their own.  After several harvests the farmers can keep the animals and any offspring that they produce.
The sailboats in the harbor most likely belong to guests at the Phuket Yacht Club, the oldest (and most exclusive) resort on the island.  It was built before the island became the tourist destination that it is now.
Laem Phromtep is the very southernmost tip of Ko Phuket...and one of the most popular sites.  It is the best place on the island to watch the sun set over the ocean.  I took this picture my last day in Phuket and it is one of my favorite memories of Thailand.
