OFFICIAL NML RULES

Modified: November 8, 2008

RULE
Modified: November 8, 2008
1. Reply to the SENDER
If you have a reply to someone's email, please reply to the sender ONLY, unless the information you are writing will be of interest and/or helpful to the entire list, or if the sender posed a discussion question (who's your favorite newsie, where did your nickname come from, etc.) to the entire list.
Do not sent a one-liner birthday greeting to the entire list.
If you need the person's e-mail, please look through the Newsies Yahoogroups Database for the last Member Update.

2. Misunderstandings are NOT fights
The emotion level can run very high on this list and e-mail is an extremely limited form of communcation. Misunderstandings are bound to happen. Please treat them as such to avoid a misunderstanding evolving into a fight. Things to keep in mind...
Be careful what you say. Make sure your intentions are clear.
Think before you speak. Don't say something you'll later regret and didn't really mean.
Don't whine about the problem. Try to explain and correct the mistake.
Don't publicize your misunderstanding to the list. Very rarely will something like that pertain to all the members of this list. Usually this sort of thing occurs between a few people. The rest of us do not need to become involved because it will just make the problem bigger. If things like this are brought up, we will have to put the list on Moderation mode that is we are going to have to approve your messages before they are being sent, so please think twice before posting.
If you have a problem with anyone on the list or just need to vent, you can e-mail or IM the list leaders(Firecracker: [email protected], AIM - cobras say WHAT; ShoeGoil: [email protected], AIM - ShoeGoil)

3. Only three e-mails per day
Up to three e-mails a day for each person.
To save inbox space, you can CHOOSE to use paragraphs, TOC's (Table of Contents), or even put everything in one whole paragraph to combine all you want to talk about in one post. It doesn't matter how you format your posts.

4. No forwards, petitions, or chain letters
No forwards or chain letters NO MATTER WHAT. (This includes those "getting to know you" things.) That's what the profiles are for, people! Go to http://nmlwelcome.cjb.net and fill out the form there.
If you need to put up a petition, ask the list mommies ([email protected]). They will put one up for you on a website.
If you received something funny or interesting and want share with the list, copy and paste the portion of that message to your post to the list. Just remember to label it OT and/or rate it according to its content. Refer to Rule #18.
The no-forwards rule is important because it is really annoying to find numerous forwarded email addresses listed before the actual email and its content may offend fellow list members. So please think before you want to share your forwards.

5. One-liners
No e-mails to the whole list simply stating, "I agree with so and so" or "I don't agree with so and so"... You get the idea. No one-liners. Talk to the individual. This also includes "I'm bored..." one-liners. If you're bored, please write up a post that includes something more than just that fact.
If you need to post a one liner and it is relevant to the list, make sure you specify on the subject header by placing (1L).

6. Proofread!
Please read all the way through your messages before replying to the list about something. If you repeat something it gets annoying and useless to read. So please pay special attention to this rule.

7. Off-topic e-mails
Off-topic emails and posts about what is happening in your life other than Newsies is allowed. So, do not worry about having to always post about Newsies.
E-mails asking about those interested in talking about something OT are permitted. (i.e., sports, Dear Abby advice, Goldie Hawn, chocolate-covered espresso beans, etc.) However, those interested in the subject should reply ONLY to the inquirer and NOT the whole list. OT threads sent to the entire list get old reeeeally fast.

8. The "RB"
Yes. RB. It stands for "Random Babblings" If you need to vent or, well, babble, please affix this to the subject of your letter and give us some warning.
If you feel the need to vent using strong language, please supply a warning at the top of your post using a rating. Refer to Rule #18
Please reply only to the author.

9. "IMPORTANT" & "PLEASE READ" messages
Read over your post before sending it with that subject line. Is it really a serious matter and something that needs direct attention? Put yourself in the place of the other members on the list. Make sure that most will benefit from reading your post. Otherwise it will be like the boy who cried wolf and people will delete messages that truly are important.

10. Use only one e-mail address to post
Some of you have multiple e-mail addresses subscribed to the list, so please only use one of them to post to the list. Multiple e-mail addresses will get confusing to those reading your posts.
If you have problems using your addresses to post, send an e-mail to the list mommies at [email protected], asking us to send it through.
Do not throw a fit if your post does not go through. Most likely Yahoogroups or your email server delayed. It will go through eventually. You can also look up the yahoogroups site if it is posted there.

11. Send your mail to *one* address
Send your e-mails to [email protected]

12. No trash talking
No bad mouthing any actors/actresses or anyone for that matter or even the film (goodness forbid!). That even also goes for playing a prank on the list using it.
If you totally disrespect the list, *ahem* then you will promptly be removed. PERIOD. Again, it even also goes for playing a prank.
Watch and *think* before you say something. We've all got our opinions, but trashing things is never necessary. If this happens, you won't be allowed to be a member again.

13. Removal from the list
Do NOT bother the whole list by e-mailing "please unsubscribe me" or "someone get me off this list!".
If you want to be removed from the list, notify the list mommies at [email protected], or send a blank email to [email protected]

14. Personal conflicts
If you're having any problems with anyone on the list (including us), e-mail them personally and not the entire list!

15. We are not universal problem-solvers
We are not universal problem solvers, but we are willing to help smooth out communication lines between list members. Please don't e-mail us trying to get us to solve a quarrel some people are having outside of the list. We can only deal with what's going on IN the list. If you are having problems with a member/members of the list and would like to discuss it with us, please e-mail [email protected], or get us directly (Firecracker: [email protected], AIM- cobras say WHAT; ShoeGoil: [email protected], AIM-ShoeGoil)
16. Posts containing offensive material
Posts containing potentially offensive material (such as religion, politics, and the like) must contain a warning in the subject line

17. No Posers
The list will not tolerate any posers, in other words, people pretending to be someone that they are not and lying to the list. This includes:
Current list members posing as a whole different person pretending to be a newbie. Even though it is intended as a joke for a few people, the list will be affected as well.
Listees posing as Newsie actors. It is not fair to everyone to get their hopes up.
Staging an extreme situation (death, etc.); just don't think about doing this. Period.
They will be found out eventually and when they are, they will be banned from the list immediately. Don't try to lie to the list, it is not worth it. It is not fair to toy with the mind of people even online! You can never be sure how it will effect others so do not risk that.
Note that you are fully responsible for your email accounts so do not give out your passwords or share it with anyone at all. You never know when someone could pose as you on the list.

18. Strong Language
Please keep cursing on posts to a minimum. If you must express yourself fully, please supply a warning in your subject line to be considerate of others.
So, what this means is... Do NOT surprise everyone with a post full of explicit language and such. So, again it is REQUIRED that you supply a warning in the subject line of your post.
Violating this rule will result with a warning. There will be only 3 chances and if exceeded, list probation will be effective.
Be aware there are younger members on the list and after all, Newsies is a PG-rated movie. Keep in mind, parents may read over their children's e-mail, so don't risk having them to be forced to unsubscribe the list.

19. Posting Fan Fiction
If you are posting fan fiction to the list, please supply a description by placing the following before the story:
Name of fic:
Author:
E-mail:
Content Rating & Why:
There is a format so that the listees know the content of the fic before they start reading. As related to rule #18, there are young members on the list that may not be ready for certain subject matters. It is for this reason we ask that any NC-17-rated fics be sent through the list via an attachment or a website link. Also, it is extremely important that, along with the fic, a warning is posted stating any possibly offensive or controversial subjects including, but not limited to, religion, rape, slash, excessive violence, language, adult themes or situations, drug use, and the like.

20. Complaints about Lack of Responses
Do not post to the list complaining and accusing them for not replying to your post quickly or giving you feedback on fan fiction.
Understand that list members have lives outside the computer and outside the Newsies mailing list. Many of the members have school, parental authorities that limit online time, and sometimes posts do not go through. Therefore, replies will not always get to you five seconds after you post.
Be patient and Instant Message people about your requests and such. A list of screen names for NMLers can be found on the yahoo database, NML Hall of AIM.

21. Subscribing under a new yahoo profile or email address
If you want to subscribe under a new yahoo profile, please email the list mommies at [email protected] so we can approve your new profile as soon as possible. Don't fill out another newbie profile.
If you don't let us know, we are going to think you are a newbie who has not filled out a newbie profile. So you will never get your new profile approved if you don't notify us.
When switching to a new email address, please email us and let us know, so that we can update the members list.

22. Official Ideas for the mailing list
If you have an idea that will serve the list, such as the Official NML Fan Fiction Archive, the official NML Zine, or the official NML Welcome Page, please notify the list leaders so they can verify it to be official, in order to avoid multiple web pages and confusion for the list.

Repeated disregard for the rules may result in your probation or removal from the list.

POSTING TIPS
Basic suggestions for posting:

-Use TOC's (Table of Contents) to organize your post. You can also be creative with making one. If you don't like TOC's, try paragraphs at least, for easier reading.

-Make the subject line in your email relevant to your post. Listees often get full inboxes and won't be able to read ALL posts unless the subject line is of interest to them. Even if you have an important post for the whole list, some listees may delete them all because the subject line does not make any sense.

-Also in the subject, don't follow Jack Kelly's habit with headlines. Improving the truth won't work on this list. Don't make the subject line a false impression of your post that leads to force readers to read a post irrelevant to them when the subject line says "OMG!! Guess what?!" and then fool them into reading it. This is a big nuisance to readers and rude as well. Just be honest in your subject lines or else listees would not bother reading another post from you even if you really do have something important to tell them.

-If you use HTML to decorate your email with colors and fonts, please be aware of the colors you use to post. It is impossible for listees to read yellow on a white background or a bright blue font on a bright green background. Same goes for dark on dark colors. Don't strain listees' eyes. If you want people to read your post, don't make it difficult for them to.

-Don't forget to put your newsie name at the end of your post. People want to know whose e-mail they are reading. It also won't hurt to supply your screen name if you want people to IM you. If you have an email server or program that let you create a signature, use it!

-Before you post anything like "I'm bored, I want to chat with someone" or "I'm bored, I want to RP!", make sure you look up this web site for email addresses and screen names to contact, or refer to past posts from listees' screen names. Usually "bored" posts are a nuisance to listees who don't want to read 1 liners all the time.

-Proofread & spellcheck when you can. Also type out words that people would be able to read. Sometimes phrases like "I want 2 B your fr8nd" will be annoying to read. Spell things out as clear as you can, but wit da exception of postin' wit da Newsie accent.

-Try posting something that is relevant to the whole list. A random one liner post usually ends up being deleted. So bottom line, don't post to annoy list members. People want to get to know you and read about Newsies, not a one liner saying "I smell like cheese."

-Don't post in ALL CAPS... it comes off as rude and screaming at listees. Plus it is hard to read if you want your point to get across. This also goes for the UpPeRcAsE/ LoWeRcAsE typing. It's just plain annoying. Don't use it on the list.

-Most of all, don't try to be a rebel. Trust us. There are more ways to "be cool". Constantly breaking the rules, annoying and disrespecting listees just doesn't cut it.

1L

One-liner! Put this in the subject of your emails when you just need to ask a quick question of the NML, or there's a chat going on that you want to know about, or the like. Make sure to read the rule about one-liners!

Beta Reader

This is the term for a person who reads over Fan Fiction (See 'FF' below), and gives you thoughtful, detailed feedback (FB). A beta reader can be an editor, and fix grammar and spelling for you, or they can check your plot, make sure there are no holes, and give you a detailed synopsis of your characters. And, sometimes, both. Beta Readers are just other fans who love fan fiction and want to help other authors, so if you want one, be sure to say so in a post. There's quite a few on the NML! Also, just as a tip, try to find a particular beta reader you trust; everyone has different opinions, and you don't want someone who's totally on a different wavelength than you. After all, when it comes down to it, it's your story, and your rules!

CC

'CC' Stands for 'Casting Call'. Casting Calls are often used by authors of fan fiction to get characters for a story they're writing. The way it works is, they'll send out what they need (the name, the history, etc.), and you fill it out for your character (or characters) and send it back to them! Don't feel bad if they don't use your character; often times, they get more responses than they can use, or it's just not the right character for their story. Don't worry about it! Just keep trying! Also, try not to use netspeak (you=u, see=c, and so on) when writing out a profile; makes it harder for the author to read, though it might not seem that way!

CTB

Carryin' (or Carrying) the Banner (or Bannah). It's constantly used as a way to sign off posts, or in signatures, or even talking on instant messengers! Cute, neh? CTB Forever!

FB

Feedback. Feedback is usually used in regards to fan fiction! For instance, if Suzy Q sends out her story to the NML, she'll probably say somewhere in the email, "FB, please!!" What she means is, if you read it, she'd like you to send her back something to let her know you read it. It doesn't have to be long; sometimes it can just be a few words, sometimes it can be a few paragraphs! It depends on what you feel! Totally up to you. Also, it's used in shout outs, as well (see SO below). If you sent feedback to Johnny D, he might, in his next post to the list, thank you in a shout out by saying 'thanks for the FB!'. And, well, you'd know what he was talking about! :-)

FF

Fan fiction. Ah, what can I say about fan fiction? Basically, it's stories fans write, based on or around movies, books, television shows, etc. We here in the Newsies fandom have a lot of it! I would highly suggest www.fanfiction.net (follow the 'Movies' link, and then go to 'Newsies'- it's in alphabetical order, so it's pretty easy!) and checking some out. When a post has 'FF' in the subject, that usually means the author of the email will be talking about fan fiction, or sending out a piece (or the whole story) of theirs!

Flame

Flames are no good. Often termed in regards to fan fiction, being flamed can also be talking about posts, as well. If someone 'flames' someone, that typically means they sent a mean email (or review) to the person. Flames often carry curse words, are not constructive, and are just generally useless. They're not pleasant, so let's avoid them, okay? When sending feedback for a fan fiction, keep any negative comments constructive; don't tell the author their character sucked. That's uncool. Tell them how they could better their character, and try to be as nice about it as you can; after all, it is only your opinion. Also, people sometimes call it 'flaming' during disagreements through emails; sometimes, they're correct. Keep your disagreements civil, and polite, and there will be no problem! And, if there is, at least you know that you're not in the wrong.

LE

A Listee Experience! This is a term used to describe a spotting of something that reminded you of a listee, usually their nickname. If you see something, like the name of a clothing line or a restaurant, and you recognize it as a listee's nickname, feel free to share! You don't even have to know the listee, maybe you just saw them post or something. It's definitely a neat conversation starter.

Muse

You'll see this term a lot. It's just a term to describe a person who helps an author of fan fiction with their writing. Goodness, sometimes it's not even a person! If you get writers block or run out of ideas, this person (imaginary or real) helps you through! Very cute.

NE

A Newsie Experience (much like a listee experience, only based off of things to do with the actual movie itself)! This could be anything from seeing a newsie cap, to spotting a 'Doogie Howser' episode on television! Maybe you saw a 'Spot Way' street sign! You name it!

NN

Nickname, or often, Newsie Nickname. This is what your listee buds can call you! Pretty self-explanatory!

OT

Off Topic. You'll see this a lot, sometimes in the subject line of a post, sometimes in the email itself- it just means that whatever the thing is about, it's not on the topic of Newsies. This way, people can skip over it if they like!

OnT

On Topic. Haha, you probably guessed it! Just the opposite of OT- this is to let people know that something is on the topic of Newsies!

PTF

Pelvic Thrusts Forever! Much like CTB, this is just a fun little term people use, often when signing off of something.

RB

Random Babblings. This is usually OT stuff, people talking about their days, whatever they want. You'll generally see this in posts, I've never really seen it elsewhere. Try to keep your RB down to a minimum, and put it with other OnT stuff in your posts to the list; RB is fun, but we want to try and stick to OnT as much as we can! It is the 'Newsies' list, after all!

RP

Role play. Well, I didn't know how to begin to explain this, so I used CB and Storm's original explanation. So, thanks to them! And if you have one that you like better, feel free to send it in!
"Role play is kinda like a fan fic, except it is happening with two people, and they both decide what is happening. You RP in chatrooms, or on an Instant Message. If CB and Storm were RPing, CB would play herself and Spot (for Storm), and Storm would play herself and Mush (for CB). You do whatever you want, and RP's can get extremely wild sometimes, so be prepared. But in general, when you first start out, people behave somewhat normal."

SO

SO stands for Shout Outs, which are often located at the end of peoples' posts. This is just a little section where you can leave a little message (usually a sentence or two, maybe more or less, depending on what you want!) for your listee friends! It's pretty neat to receive shout outs, nothing like reading an email and saying, "Whoa! There's my name!" So, it's definitely a neat thing!

TOC

Table of Contents. You know, as in, a table of contents in a book? That's the one! Except, it's used in this regard to organize a post; it'll number (often in a rather clever fashion) the topics in the email, and it will make it really easy for you to just scan over and go right to what you want to see! Not that you wouldn't want to read the whole thing, of course. :-)

Got a term I should add? Let me know!
