We're Making Movies! In August, The NJ Filmmakers Salon dove into film development and production. As the the result of a brainstorming breakfast, salon members decided it was time to "stop talking about movies . . . and start making movies." Garden State filmmakers possess so much raw talent and energy, yet lack access to funding and resources or the ability to work close to home. And looming state budget cuts to the arts only deepen the frustration. Choosing the name Exit 131 Productions, the group agreed that by joining forces, NJ filmmakers could begin to create their own opportunities. The timing is right for such an endeavor, because the digital revolution has made it both inexpensive and easy for an experienced crew, armed with a good script, to go out and shoot and edit a film in a rather short period of time. For students and rookie filmmakers, the group provides the opportunity to watch and learn from more experienced crew members. For veteran crew members, there is the prospect of writing, directing, producing, editing, or taking on other more challenging roles. Keeping the shoots to "zero-budgets" is made possible by generous donations in time, equipment, services, and manpower by each of the production's crew and cast members. The mission of Exit 131 Productions is to create both artistic and professional opportunities for New Jersey filmmakers. This mission will be met by removing budgetary blockades, providing production and technical assistance, and pooling the resources and talent from our local communities.
