Offensive/Defensive Tactics

Background: Offensive/Defensive Tactics

Other teams will be making different robots.  Each design has its own strengths and weaknesses.  The key is to maximize your advantages, and exploit the other teams disadvantages in order to win.  Here are some tactics against different types of weapons you may encounter.

BMW (no weapon)
BMWs are usually fast, powerful, maneuverable and have strong armor.  This is because they dont waste weight on weapons.  Try to determine which end is more vulnerable to your weapons, and attack that end.  Also, go for the wheels.

Thwack-bots
Thwack-bots attack by spinning around, hoping their tail will catch the opponent.  However, they cannot move when they are in a spin, since the spinning energy comes from their drive motors working in opposite directions.  After a while, a thwack-bot driver will get sick of spinning around and wasting batteries while you sit there.  When it stops to maneuver, this is the time to strike.

Cutting Blade Robots
A robot can armed with a cutting blade is not very dangerous.  Although you need to be very careful it doesnt come around to cutting your tether.  If it manages to do so, youre as good as dead.  A quick note.  Cutting blade weapons are usually good crowd-pleasers, so if you let it inflict damage that the audience can see, youre losing points.

Kinetic Energy Weapons/Spinners
Always attack these by running in the same direction as the weapons rotation, so you dont get the full force of the blow.  These are usually slow, because a lot of energy is devoted to the weapon drive motor.  Try to outmaneuver it.

Lifters
Obviously, you avoid the lifting arm.  But also try to determine how many lifts it can do before it needs to b serviced.  NITRO RoboWarriors will mostly be rubber-band or spring powered, so reloading during a match is impossible.

Other Notes
One other thing worth noting is to protect the tether, because if it is cut, you lose complete control to the robot.  Before a battle, make sure everything is in working order.  Make sure the batteries are charged and all motors are working.  Make sure the controller works as well.  Weapon systems are only secondary in this competition.  The goal is to push the opponent out of the ring, and weapons are only there to help disable the opposing robot (and to score points with the judges).
