Malaikat Shuurajou

Also known by her English nickname Kat, Malaikat is at least 1000 years old.  She was raised in the tiny Malaysian town of Penang, and was the eldest daughter of the town's harbormaster.  She was raised to love and respect the sea, and has the ability to change water into rice wine by adding only a few grains of rice.

Kat was embraced when a trio of vampires attaked Panang.  The three yin decimated Penang's population in a matter of 7 nights.  Kat's family was among the last to be taken, as her father and brother's put up a fight even the vampires had difficulty in handling. But they were unaware the one of the yin, Maut, had mesmerized Kat into falling in love with him, and she invited them in that last night.  Maut tied up her family, and embraced Kat in front of her horrified mother and father.  Kat awoke to find her parents dead and the three other vampires slowly and methodically draining her brothers, leaving her three younger sisters for last.  Angered that Maut had tricked her, she threw a handful of rice in their way (vampires cannot stand disorder and had to pick up every piece before they could continue) and then used her father's sword to kill them. She saved her sisters, but feared that one day they would be victim to her own attacks.  That night she left Penang forever and took one of her father's boats to China. She was determined to find out who had created Maut, and destroy them as payment to the god's for her parents' deaths.

Kat's demon grew stronger then her mortal moralities, and when she met Maut's Clan she did not attack them but instead joined them.  Maut's sire Nakiato took her on as his lover, and their expolits were known throughout the mainland.

As time passed, the Shuurajou Clan moved throughout Asia, always seeking fresh blood and victims.  Nakiato had heard rumors of new lands to explore, and was determined to see his Clan conquor the mortals wherever they went. The Clan became known simply as the jin.  The demons.  They took whatever they wanted and no force seemed able to resist.  Not Emperors, not warlords, not armies.

One night after they had relocated again to the town of Kyoto in Japan, the Clan had a great feast as the harbor.  Hundreds of mortals were slain and the Clan grew drunk on the blood.  When they awaoke the next day, they discovered that the surviving townspeople had tricked them - the harbor was gone, and they were floating on a boat.  The townspeople had sacrificed many of their family members to ensure the gods would hear their prayers.  The gods heard - and took the boat full of Shuurajou to a deserted island.  Here there were no humans, no source of food save the fish in the sea.  Within days, the Clan members were warring with one another over food.

Kat watched as sire turned against child, and her own lover turned against her.  No one would listen as she tried to tell them how they could survive for a long period of time on the blood of what they caught from the sea.  Unable to deal with what she saw as the stupidity of her own, Kat and her favorite childe Aiji waited until their Clan had gone to sleep and then burned the buildings housing them to the ground destroying all inside.  The two vampires then built a boat and headed for the island of Okinawa.

In Okinawa, Kat began her own family.  Unlike Nakiato, who felt mortals were there merely for sport and food, Kat taught her Clan to respect their prey.  Thus began the first concept of the Masquerade.  They knew that if mortals knew of their existence, their lives would be forfeit.  It was under Kat's leadership that her Clan grew to legion numbers, both in Okinawa and throughout Asia.

As British colonists pushed through out Asia, and the beginnings of the British and French colonies began, Kat became fascinated by the idea of settling in a new world.  She used her own powers to convince an English captain to take her with her, as well as Aiji, to the 'New World'.  Unable to deny her anything, he did as he was told.  Thus Malaikat Shuurajou came to America.

In New York, Kat discovered that the New World was full of possibilities.  The Europeans did not know of the power of the sea.  She sent for many of her own to come from Okinawa, and to bring their mortal slaves. The Shuurajou's first fortune was made by taking control of the harbor of New York City.  Despite the anti-immigrant sentiment that was rampant in the 18th and 19th centuries, Clan Shurrajou became a stronghold for power in New York.

In the 20th century, the Clan has watched their adopted country grow with great interest.  They have never been overly involved with politics, leaving that to the Hemithanes, preferring to become involved with the worlds of banking and technology.  Their main monetary income comes from controlling the harbors and piers of the city, and as such they are easily the most knowledgeable.  Kat has taken great pains to keep
her Clan's presence fairly hidden in the city, but few business men have not heard of the Clan's company, the Shuuken corporation.  Of all the Clan heads, Kat is the most vocal supporter of maintaining the Masquerade, and easily the most respectful of their mortal counterparts.

Her lover is Tansei, who is also her head of the Clan's Enforcers.  Their relationship is as much a business relationship as it is a physical partnering - she need his cool head in times of battle, he needs her access to power and political connections to maintain his level of control over his Enforcers.  The two are close friends, but definitely are not romantic in their dealings with one another - Kat has never quite recovered from the anguish her first brush with love cost her family, and Tansei is in love with her daughter, Aiji.  But do not make the mistake of assuming these two are not willing to die for one another.
