Full Storyline

On her way to a dentist's appointment Prue is diverted by what seem to be "signs" leading her to an apartment building under demolition. In fact Cole is manipulating her. She finds that one of the tenants, Vince, is refusing to leave. He begs her to stay away from him. As she gets closer he can feel her toothache and it seems that the reason he cannot go outside is that he feels everyone's pain, physical and psychological.

She arrives back at the manor at the same time as Cole who has come to take Phoebe to lunch. Earlier Piper had complained that her relationship with Leo was not "normal enough" and he takes the opportunity to invite himself and Phoebe to the lunch, much to everyone else's chagrin. Before he leaves he tells Prue that Vince may be an empath, a human who can take on other people's pain, actually feeling the emotions and hurts of others. They are often found in such occupations as priest and teacher. In Vince's case it appears to be out of control. Prue returns to try to talk Vince out, but eventually as a last resort she "cures" him of his empathic powers. It turns out that Leo was half right, Vince was an empath, but he is no human. As soon as Prue has left he kills a police deputy, delighted that he feels nothing.

Meanwhile lunch has been an awkward affair. Cole takes time out to talk to "Vince", in reality the demon Vinceres. Due to her helping him, Prue has now received his empathic abilities. Cole learns that, being human, Prue will probably last no more than a day before the torment kills her. Prue discovers her new abilities when she experiences feelings of love by being around Cole and Phoebe. Phoebe had all but given up on Cole but, spurred on by Prue's revelation, pays him an unexpected visit. One thing leads to another (!) and they spend the night together for the first time.

At first Prue is determined to see the upside of empathy, thinking that it will help her to help others, but soon finds herself suffering and not much use to anyone. A Phoebe premonition leads them to Father Thomas, a patient at Crest Hills Psychiatric Hospital. He has a previous history with Vinceres and the demon is on his trail killing those that get in his way. They help Father Thomas escape and adjourn back to the manor where they are attacked by Vinceres. By now Prue is cowering in the attic and Phoebe and Piper must fight him alone. Things are looking grim until Father Thomas gives Prue a serious pep talk. Prue emerges and, in a scene highly reminiscent of The Matrix, she and Vinceres engage in some heavy martial arts before her astral self destroys him from the inside out. After a sojourn at P3 the last scene finds Phoebe in the arms of Cole, who is clearly torn by conflicting feelings.
