Phoebe and Prue visit Kate and after being sprinkled with fairy dust are able to see Thistle, the fairy who Kate keeps locked safe in a box. Prue and Phoebe take the key for safe-keeping. Unfortunately the fairy dust makes them behave childishly, and before long they are "entertaining" the patrons of P3 with an impromptu floor show. Piper packs them off home, where a sudden troll attack sends them tumbling down the stairs while the trolls make off with the key.
The Book of Shadows contains a spell to reveal trolls without the side-effects of fairy dust, but they need Piper to perform it. The trolls do everything in their power to stop her getting home, but she finally makes it and the spell is cast. Midnight arrives and the girls arrive at Kate's just as she is being turned into a fairy and both she and Thistle are being carried off by the trolls. They can't see the trolls and Piper admits that her heart wasn't in the spell and that may be why it didn't work.
They are at a loss as to what to do next, but fortunately a mysterious fairy appears and leads them to "Troll Central" where the dastardly trolls are about to burn Kate and Thistle alive. With some co-ordinated use of their various powers, the sisters rescue them and it is the trolls who go up in smoke. Kate, who recently lost her father and isn't too keen on the human world, wants to stay a fairy. In a speech addressed as much to herself as to Kate, Piper says that she too lost someone she loved, but that because other people need us, we all have to carry on and do the things we have to do.
Kate returns to human form and the girls return home where Piper confirms that her strike is over and she is willing to give up Leo forever if that is what is necessary for the good of others. Whereupon Leo appears and tells her that, impressed by her noble sacrifice, the Powers That Be have agreed to give them one more chance to be together and prove that they can have a relationship without it interfering with their performance of their duties.
Meanwhile in a continuing sub-plot, we find that Cole has some sort of sinister dossier on Phoebe, containing such personal information as who her all-time movie heart-throb is. (It's Billy Appleby, see Chick Flick). Cole invites her to a Billy Appleby movie. She is too busy to go, but he turns up at the house where, after gaining admittance on the pretext of using the toilet, he reveals his true demon form as he tries (unsuccessfully) to get his hands on the Book of Shadows. Although they see the demon, Phoebe and Prue don't realise it is Cole and he manages to make his goodbyes in human form, keeping his secret safe for another week.

Full Storyline
Kate is a girl with a posse of trolls after her because she is keeping a fairy safe from them. She crosses the sisters's path when Phoebe nearly runs her over. Phoebe is the only one to believe Kate's story and does a little reasearch. She finds that trolls live in a parallel world but can make their presence felt in the "in-between-spaces" of our world such as doorways and windows. Midnight, the time between one day and the next is the time when their power in our world is at its greatest. When Phoebe produces some childhood drawings which suggest that the Halliwells too saw trolls and fairies as children, Prue is reluctantly convinced, but Piper is still sceptical. Besides which she is so upset with the Powers That Be for taking Leo from her that she vows not to do anything to help their cause ever again.
