Some claim that from the beginning of human society there was a division of labor between women and men, arising out of biological differences between the sexs.
But this is not correct. In ancient times of simple, cooperative societies, women were the equal of men. Women reproductive abilities became the excuse, but are not the true reason for women being oppressed. In the time after the settlement of Israel and other countries. People of olden times descendents suffered from warfare, disease and famine threatened their extinction. For the survival of humanity, it became imperative for women to have many children while still participating as equals in the raising of crops. The rules of society which were formulated then, and which we recognize from the Bible reflected the urgent reality of the need to be fruitful and multipy.
Women were in short supply because giving birth to many children increased risk of illness and death. Women live only three-fourths as long as men. This increased women's social value, but at the same time women did not live to the age of venerability to take on positions of community leadership and influence. Eventually changing social conditions no longer required the emphasis on domestic labor and high fertility for survival, but by then social customs and laws created by the male elders had become so ingrained that women's limited role could not expand to suit the times. The development of cities broadened the business role of men, while women's economic contribution in peasant agriculture became less and less important. Thus as women our important role in perpetuating society through our reproductive capacity became the excuse, rather than the cause for our lack of power.
Like the slaves in Egypt, women had assured the foundation of a strong society, but we had no hand in its direction and as slaves
history ignores the important role we have played.
In these earlier times people lack alot of the understanding of the high tech toys we have today. Many people however had a closer relationship to the universe, earth, elements, animials and them selves that we have lost in many instances today.
What have we lost? We have lost the mystical component of ourselves and the universe. When we do stubble over some wonder people try and package it and sell it to the public at large, without concern for the consequences. The interesting things in all this is that as mulit national company try to control every thing in our lives, spark of majic are slowly beginning to spark in the strangest places. More and more people are letting go of the illusion of high tech gods and returning to them selves and the universe... We creat our own spell with the words that come from with in.....
There is a price to pay for every thing; so be ware of what your desires creat...
When Christianity slowly became the major religion of Europe and the rest of the world, people that understood and followed the old ways had to go underground !!! These people kept to their ancient beliefs in secret. This was true for the Goddesses and their Priestesses, Artemis, Isis, Diana, Hecate, Danu, Bast and Sekhmet etc. The concept of Great Earth Mother who give and took life became heresy, and the cats that were the symbol of the Goddess became despised. The old believe did not disappear entirely Christianity and the newer religions could not destroy them so they stole the old believes and traditions that they could not destroy and claim it as their own. Today when I see the ancient beliefs shining through from the pass and helping to shape events of today. You may turn a side from ancient beliefs but that doesn't not mean you have destroy them or that they will never come back again. The ancient beliefs were
base on real powers that could not be destroy by humans, so religions simply put a mentally block into the minds of their followers. You cannot remove a truth or memory from the collective human psyche even though many tried and believe they have accomplish it.
Almost every reglious or spiritual believe today can trace their roots back to pagan believes. The word "pagan" mean "of the earth". Many people wish that we would forget that we are of the earth so that they may kill animials and pollute the earth with out thought or feeling. If the earth dies so do we.
