Internet Usage - A Review

Time: 45-50 minutes
                                                                                                                                                              

Instructional Objective:
Students will learn about appropriate Internet usage including page navigation, security, and information referencing

Behavioural Objective:

Students will be able to read on-line material regarding Internet usage and to participate in a class discussion to reinforce their learning about effectivve and appropriate Internet use.

Curriculum Outcomes:
# 1, 2, 4, 5

Introduction:
- explain to students that the Yugoslavia unit will rely heavily on Internet usage
- review information before starting

Learning Activity Procedure:
- refer students to
on-line guidelines for Internet usage and have students read them
- have students practice navigation and referencing materials by visiting the following site:
www.lonelyplanet.com/destinations/europe/yugoslavia/culture.htm
- facilitate a discussion about appropriate Internet usage

Sample Questions:
- how do you find and follow a link?
- what does "plagarism" mean?
- how should you reference another person's page?
- why is it important to date each reference you make?
- why is it dangerous to offer personal information on the web?
- which sites are appropriate to visit in a public lab? which are not?

Conclusion:
- tie together importance of responsible and safe Internet usage

Evaluation:
- teacher circulation - are students on-task?
- student participation and analysis of student responses and justifications
- no homework

Differentiation Possibilities:
- have
gifted students who are already familiar with the Internet begin work on a web-page designed to document the class' learning about Yugoslavia (have them decide on a colour scheme, layout etc.)

- have
modified students work in groups to read the guidelines and visit the site (they would not practice the referencing)
