LESSON #2 BACKGROUND KNOWLEDGE & SOME THOUGHTS ON BIAS Time: 45-50 minutes |
Instructional Objectives: - Students will learn to create a concept map to represent their prior knowledge regarding the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. - Students will learn about the concepts of BIAS and MOTIVE in written media Behavioural Objectives: - Students will be able to use a word processor to create a concept map representing their knowledge about Yugoslavia, to save this information to disk, and to print it. - Students will be able to identify examples of BIAS and MOTIVE and explain why they appear in sources. Curriculum Outcomes: # 1, 2, 3, 8, 10 Introduction: - students will be asked to create a concept map detailing their knowledge about Yugoslavia - have students also make note of where they got/learned this information - have students save this information to a disk to be referred to later on Learning Activity Procedure: - facilitate a class discussion about their individual concept maps - make sure the sources of their knowledge are identified and recorded! - work with the class to create a collective concept map, record this information, and store it on disk for future reference - have students refer to their on-line notes regarding BIAS and MOTIVE in written media - after they have read this, facilitate a discussion on these concepts Sample Questions: - what does it mean to be "biased?" - what is a motive? (think crime shows on TV) - what sorts of sources are sometimes biased? why do you think this is? - what sorts of motives might a writer have to write a certain way? Conclusion: - summarize class knowledge about Yugoslavia and review concepts of bias and motive Evaluation: - circulation during individual work (are students on-task?) - collection of concept maps (complete or incomplete) - student participation and justification of answers - no homework Differentiation Possibilities: - have gifted students continue to work on the class webpage during the concept map discussion, during the mini-lesson on bias, have them add the collective concept map to the web page (these students should also be able to contribute verbally to the discussions) - have modified students work in teams with classmates to complete the concept map (these students should be able to contribute to discussions, but will not be evaluated on their ability to do so) |
