Once upon a time...

LEAVING MALAYSIA

Where do I start ?  Okay, I will begin at the beginning or as far as I can remember.  My parents named me Nicholas Peter Francis Yuen-Wah Foo.   Since I was born a Catholic and of Chinese descent, I get lots of names added to my family name of "Foo".

I grew up in a country called Malaysia.  I do not live there any more but I am getting ahead of myself.  Malaysia is divided into two.  One part is situated in a peninsula called West Malaysia.  The other is the second half of the island of Borneo called East Malaysia.  I lived in a town called Petaling Jaya or "P.J." for short.  It is a suburb of Kuala Lumpur on the West Coast of West Malaysia.  I had the best childhood.  Growing up in my part of the world was great.  It was a melting pot of many races : Chinese, East Indian, Sikh, Dutch, German, Malay and Eurasian.

I went to a High School called La Salle (LSPJ) in P.J. and graduated in 1977.  It was an all Boys School.  And boys will be boys.  I wore a school uniform.  The uniform was all white in High School, but later the School officials changed the pants to "khaki green".  Before the introduction of Automated School Bells, I was the School Official Bell Ringer for 2 years from 1976 till 1977.  Everyone in school always wanted me to ring the bell early so everyone could go home early.  After I left in 1977, I enrolled in Vanto Academy to finish my Cambridge "A" Levels.  My parents decided that it was time for me to decide what I wanted to do with my life.  I wanted to go overseas to study.  I wanted to get into a Canadian College.  Why?  There is family in Canada and that helps ease my parents' fears.

I left Malaysia in December 1979 and enrolled into a small community college called Columbia College in Vancouver, Canada.  It was scary at first but the Canadians were really friendly.  After a year, I applied to Simon Fraser University which was located in a suburb of Vancouver called Burnaby.  At SFU, I started my second year in Computer Science.  I worked hard.  There were times when I stayed up 3 days in a row without sleep just to finish my final computing projects.  I think it was one big test of my endurance.  Suffice to say, I took a vacation from studies.  I returned to Malaysia.
