~~~~When Fate Smiles~~~~
Part One
She was sitting alone, reading. She had been sitting there for a good hour, nibbling on her salad and immersed in her book. He had been watching her ever since he came in the restaurant. He was alone too, which was pretty rare for him. But, he had managed to shake his ever present hangers -on and here he was. Making sure she wasn't looking, he stared at her from top to toe. She was about 5'4" or so, he knew this because she had gotten up to remove her jacket and then sat back down, stretching her legs out on the chair across from her. Her brown hair was short, she ran her fingers through it every so often as she read, her eyes looked dark, but he couldn't tell from here what color they were. Her face was free of makeup, her nails wore no polish, totally natural. He smiled to himself. She was so naturally pretty, he thought, she probably doesn't even realize it. Not like most of the girls that approached him, not even like his ex. Definitely not like her at all. He tried to summon up the courage to go over to her, to say something to her but something stopped him each time he went to stand.
Her eyes skimmed over the words on the page before her, but she had long ago stopped reading them. He was looking at her again. She knew who he was, what woman in her right mind wouldn't? But she wasn't going to let him know that she knew his name. Glancing briefly at him, she sighed. His blond hair shone under the restaurant lighting, his blue eyes casting their spell all the way across the room. His girlfriend was such a lucky bitch to be able to sleep with him whenever she wanted to. Yeah, she chuckled to herself, she was jealous of a 19 year old, no talent, Britney wanna be. But I would still drop whatever I was doing to have one night with him, she thought, stealing a glance at him again. Just one night. As if he would ever be interested in me.
He finally stood and moved over to the bar. He was at least a little closer to her and could see that her eyes were brown, but flecked with gold and green that caught the light from the candle flickering on her table. "What can I get you, sir?" He swivelled his head in surprise, the voice had startled him. "Oh, um, nothing." Then, thinking. "Do you know what she is having?" The bartender looked over. "Appears to be iced tea." "Okay, can I have two please?" The bartender placed them on the counter before him and he paid for them up slowly, still deciding on his course of action.
She watched him pick up the drinks and make his way over to her. She tried to remain nonchalant and pretended she didn't see him as he sat in the chair beside her. "Hi." he said softly, setting the drink beside the empty glass already on the table. "Hi yourself." she answered, marking her page and closing the book. "I was wondering what you were reading? I've been sitting across the room there..." His arm pointed in the general direction of the table he had been sitting at. She smiled at him and his heart jumped. Her smile was just as natural and pretty as the rest of her. She handed him the book. "The Shining" by Stephen King. "So you like gore, huh?" he teased, handing it back to her. "Can't beat the classics." she murmured, stuffing it into her purse.
"I'm Nick." He put out his hand and she took it in hers. His skin was so smooth, the nails were perfectly manicured, but with a small amount of dirt under them. She ran her fingers along the soft blond hairs on the back of his hand before releasing it. "I'm Dawn." she replied. "That's a beautiful name." "That's the oldest line in the book!" They laughed together. "No really, it is." "Thank you." No point in arguing with him. "So what brings you over here, Nick?"
