~~~~Two Lives,One Heart~~~~
Chapter Twenty~Three
As soon as she got into the car, Elisha popped the CD in the player and set it to the fourth song. Steve Perry's voice rang out through the speakers, the song was called "Faithfully".
Highway run, into the midnight sun Wheels go round and round, you're on my mind Restless hearts, sleep alone tonight Sending all my love, along the wire
They say that the road ain't no place to start a family right down the line it's been you and me and lovin' a music man ain't always what it's supposed to be Oh girl, you stand by me I'm forever yours - faithfully
Circus life, under the big top world We all need the clowns to make us smile Through space and time, always another show Wondering where I am Lost without you And being apart ain't easy on this love affair Two strangers learn to fall in love again I get the joy of rediscovering you Oh girl, you stand by me I'm forever yours - faithfully
Faithfully, I'm still yours I'm forever yours Ever yours - Faithfully
Elisha pulled over and wiped the tears that were running down her face.
"Thanks Nick, I needed a good cry today!"
She laughed ruefully. She had never thought it was possible to fall in love with someone so quickly. She had friends who proclaimed undying love shortly after meeting someone and she thought they were nuts. But right at this moment she couldn't imagine her life without Nick in it.
"C'mon buddy, what's wrong? You're always up for a game!"
Nick, laying in his bunk, rolled over onto his back and laced his fingers behind his head. "I miss her, Bri. I just left her and I want to see her again so badly."
"You've got it bad, huh?"
"We just connected totally." Nick said simply. "I love her."
"Is she going to join us on tour?" Brian asked.
Nick sighed. "Yeah, but not for two weeks."
Brian grinned. "Do you think you'll make it?"
"I'm glad you think it's so funny." Nick said, smacking him in the arm. "We just met and we're already ripped apart. Sometimes I hate living like this, you know?"
"I hear you Nick, I hate being away from Linda too, but you get used to it."
"That's a big help!"
"Sorry, man." Brian held his hands up defensively. "Give her a call, it will make you feel better."
Nick looked at his watch. "She should still be at practice. I'll try her cell number."
Elisha and Jeff were almost through a difficult dance routine when she heard a phone ring.
"Hey Dan, find that will you?" she hollered.
Jeff was holding her upside down, suspended above his head. Elisha flipped out of the lift and landed on her knee gracefully. Dan held the phone out to her.
"It's yours - a Nick something or other?"
She snatched the phone away and ran over to the benches.
"Hi handsome!"
Nick sounded miserable. "I miss you."
"I miss you too, baby, where are you right now?"
Nick looked out the window and stared at the empty fields zooming by. "Halfway to I don't know, how does that sound?"
Elisha giggled. "I think someone needs a map!"
Jeff came over and tugged on her arm. "C'mon Elisha, Dan is changing everything around on us!"
"I gotta go Nick, call me after the show, okay, I'll be home." She blew kisses into the reciever. "I love you, have a good one!"
"I'll call right after!" Nick promised.
Elisha was lying in bed reading when the phone rang that night.
"Hi Nick!" she said, picking it up.
He laughed. "How did you know it was me?"
"Who else would be calling at 12:30 in the morning?" she quizzed.
"Did you find the CD?" he asked, just as she said "Thanks for the CD!"
"Did you listen to track 4?"
"Yeah, I started bawling on the interstate and had to pull over cause I couldn't see." Elisha confessed. "I love Journey, by the way. I've been listening to it all day."
"That's my favourite group." Nick proclaimed. "That should show you how much I care, ask the guys, no-one touches my Journey CDs!"
"I'm honored, sir! I will return it in two weeks time in perfect condition."
They talked over their plans to meet in Detroit and what they might do on the day off they had together.
Elisha started to yawn. "Nicky? I gotta go to sleep, my eyes are dragging."
Nick smiled to himself and softly sang to her until she was on the very brink of sleep.
