~~~~Love Above All~~~~
Chapter 8
Nick pulled the Durango in the drive, followed by Elisha in the car. He hated to make her drive so soon after giving birth, but they couldn't fit everybody into either vehicle safely. He unbuckled Brian from his booster seat and gave Elisha a pained look. "We have to get a van, don't we?" She nodded. "Suck it up, Mr. Macho. A family into a sportscar will not fit!" "You won't make me drive it will you?" She nodded again, grinning evilly. "Oh yeah, right past all your friends so they can laugh at you!" Nick stuck out his tongue at her. "Oh, good example for the kids, Mr. Carter!" She handed him the babies seats and took her older childrens hands. "Come on, kids! If we get ready for bed real quick, daddy might just have enough energy to read us all a story!" Nick rolled his eyes and followed his family into the house.
They all piled onto the bed in Nick and Elisha's room. Rebecca had picked out her favourite book, "Black Beauty". They had a habit of reading a few chapters of a book each night until the story was finished. Elisha held the babies while the older children lay across her legs and Nicks lap. As Nick began reading the story, Elisha gazed at her family admiringly. Nick was so good with the kids, and they loved him. They were staring at him now, eyes rapt, as he used different voices to depict the characters in the book. "Please don't let anything spoil this." she thought. "We've been through enough, no more."
Brian had fallen asleep shortly after the story started. Halfway through the second chapter, Rebecca's eyes had started to slowly close and then snap open again. She insisted on hearing the end of the chapter though and managed to stay awake for it. Nick carried Brian to his room and then walked Rebecca to hers. When both were finally tucked in, he returned to Elisha. He took Diana from her so that she could feed Gene. "We'll just have to pack some clothes in the morning, and the babies things. Just tell me what we need and I'll do it okay?" Elisha looked up from her son's peaceful face. "I'm so scared Nick, she's out there right now. I don't like feeling like this."
The two of them tucked the babies into their bassinet in the adjoining room and left the door ajar. "Let's see how long this lasts!" Elisha laughed. "Going by their current record, I would say about 1 hour!" Nick said, looking at his watch. "Oh boy! Let me go! I need to grab that precious one hour sleep!" They climbed into bed and snuggled together. "I'll get up with them, honey. You need your sleep." Elisha glared at him. "And how are you going to feed them? I'd have to wake up just to see that miracle." "Oh yeah." Nick glanced at her enhanced cleavage. "You're the one well equipped for that." She nodded and pulled the covers over her chest. "That and nothing more right now, Loverboy. If you knew how I felt you wouldn't even entertain a thought of sex." He looked at her innocently. "Who me?"
Elisha woke with a start and looked at the clock radio by the bed. It was 3am. "Nick!" She shook him gently at first and then a little rougher. "Nick!" He rubbed his eyes. "Uh? What?" Elisha looked panicked. "Did you get up with the twins?" "What? No, but it's only been..." Elisha pointed at the radio. "Wow! Well you remember Brian slept well right from the start." Elisha was already out of bed and pulling her robe on. "They're probably starving, I'll be right back." It was silent for a moment and then Elisha screamed. Nick would never forget the sound as long as he lived. He ran to her side, stumbling over the blankets on his way out of bed. "Elisha! What's wrong?" She was kneeling by the bassinet holding a note and an envelope out to him, still screaming. Nick knelt beside her and she collapsed against him. The envelope contained soft strands of blond hair and nothing else. The note read. "I told you it wasn't over Nick. These babies should be mine and yours. And now they're mine. But you can have this to remember them by." Elisha looked up at him in shock. "MY BABIES!!! NICK, SHE TOOK MY BABIES!!"
