~~~~Love Above All~~~~
Chapter 38
David stood when the judge called his name and he walked quickly to the front of the courtroom. "I call Elisha Carter to the stand." Elisha stood and turned briefly to Nick. She reached her hand out to him and he nodded, smiling at her. "Go on!" he whispered to her. "Show them that you did what you had to do." "I love you." she murmured and turned to walk to the witness box. The bailiff swore her in and she nervously sat down. "Hello, Elisha." David said to her, quietly. "Are you ready?" She looked quite pale and David wanted to settle her down before they started her testimony. Elisha rubbed her hands across the front of her skirt and nodded. "Let's do it!" she said to herself, firmly. David had her state her name and her age to the court. Then he asked for brief details of her family, the children and Nick. He could see that the prosecutor was getting impatient, but, for now, he was holding his tongue.
"Now, when did you first meet Mandy Williford?"
Elisha remembered the day clearly and she smiled. "Nick had come in to watch me at dance practice in Texas and she dragged him out of the room by his ear."
"Why was that?"
"She was mad that he was late returning to her and mad that he was watching other females, I think."
"Did you know Nick at the time?"
"No, I knew who he was, but I didn't know him."
"Did you have any other connect with Mandy while they were in Texas?"
"Nick and I went out to lunch, and later that day she warned me to stay away from him."
"That was it?"
"She also sent me a photo and a threatening letter. My head was cut off in the photo."
David ran through her and Nick's meeting and various other small things that Mandy had done to them and to her. The judge called a recess and excused Elisha from the chair. "Oh my. This is bringing back a lot of memories." she exclaimed, sitting next to Nick on the bench outside the courtroom and dropping her head on his shoulder. "Are you okay? You're doing so great in there." "The jury haven't taken their eyes off you since you started to talk." Howie informed her. "Really?" She looked around at her friends and family. "Is that a good sign, do you think?" "I'm sure it is." Kevin placed his hand on her shoulder and smiled. "You are doing wonderfully in there, keep it up." The bailiff announced that court would soon be back in session and they stood to file back in the courtroom.
"Now, Elisha." David paced the room and then stood facing her. "What happened when you visited Nick in Florida a few months later?"
Elisha frowned slightly and pinched her hand to stop the tears from coming.
"Nothing initially, for a couple of days anyway. Then Nick and I met his family at a restaurant for dinner. He proposed to me that night."
Elisha smiled over to Nick. "When we were driving home we were in an accident." She felt a tear fall, and she brushed it away.
"Could you explain to the court what happened to you?"
Elisha nodded and then replied. "Yes." She squeezed her eyes shut and then went on. "I don't remember much about the accident. I was unconscious for a few days after as well. But when I came to, Nick was there. He was bumped up a little and cut, but nothing major."
"And you?" David gently urged.
"I was paralyzed from the waist down." Elisha said it bluntly and listened to the murmuring of the crowd as they digested the information.
"And it was proven that Mandy Williford is the one that did this to you, correct?"
"Yes, she was arrested and sent to jail."
David entered Mandy's arrest record into the exhibits. "Now, did anything else happen before she was arrested?"
"She broke into our house and stabbed Nick. I still couldn't walk at the time and it was just before we got married. She was out on bail. She was put in jail just after that."
David nodded thoughtfully. "So things were good then?"
Elisha nodded. "We almost forgot about her, she had been sent away for so long and the judge requested counseling for her while she was in jail." She glanced over to Nick. "We tried our best to forget about her, but she was always in the backs of our minds."
"When did you find out that she was being released?"
"I was pregnant, with our twins, and they were almost due. We contacted you and later that day the twins were born so, quite obviously we had more important things to attend to later!" Elisha grinned and the audience laughed as well. "We brought them home the next day and spent the day with Nick's parents. We hadn't heard yet that she had been released, until we got to Nick's parents house. I was terrified and Nick made the plans for us to come here until we could get her back in jail." She wiped more tears from her eyes. "We went home and carefully locked the doors and windows. The babies were in with us, well the adjoining room, and we went to sleep." Elisha recounted to story of waking hours later and finding the babies missing and the note in their place. "I just screamed." she said, finally. "I was a zombie, my babies were gone." Elisha looked down at her hands and then up at the jury. "She took my babies out of my own home."
