Chapter 12

Mandy drove with no particular destination in mind. She couldn't believe that she had been too chicken to kill the kids. She had looked in their big, blue eyes, so much like Nick's, and just couldn't do it. She had decided, once she realized that she couldn't kill them, that she had to leave them there. It was too dangerous for her to travel with them. That had been three days ago, someone had probably found them, they made enough noise, someone must have heard them by now. Mandy didn't know what she was going to do now. The police would be looking for her. She wanted to see Nick so bad. She pulled into a driveway and turned the car back to the service station she had just passed. It was dangerous, but she was going back to Tampa. The need to see Nick was driving her mad, if she could just get him to talk to her, everything would be alright.

Nick and Elisha were settling in for bed when Rebecca popped her head in their doorway. "Daddy, are the twins sleeping with you and mommy?" Nick grinned and nodded. "Can Brian and I too? We missed the babies whole bunches!" Elisha looked at Nick and smiled. "I guess we can't refuse that request, can we?" Rebecca cheered and she and Brian ran through the doorway and leaped onto the bed. Nick was holding Diana and Rebecca snuggled beside him. "Oh sure, all the girls go to him!" Elisha pouted as Nick threw her a triumphant smile. "Well that's alright, I have my two men right here, that's enough for me!" She wrapped her free hand around Brian. "Mommy, what was Gene doing?" Elisha had just removed the still hungry Gene from her breast. Nick and Elisha exchanged looks over the childrens heads. "That's how little babies eat, honey, from their mothers." Nick explained. "Yuck!" Brian exclaimed. "I never did that!" Nick passed Diana over as she started to fuss for food. "Oh, yes you did, little man!" "And you enjoyed it just as much as your brother!" Elisha laughed. "Come to think of it, aren't these little ones enjoying it a bit too much? We don't want them to be sick. It seems like they've been eating since they came home almost." Nick rocked Gene gently and stroked Rebecca's hair with his other hand. Both children were almost asleep. "I asked the doctor about it, and he said it was fine. We don't know how much food they had while they were with....while they were gone. They know when they're full." She poked Gene in the tummy. "Not this little piggy though. I think he'd be quite happy if I just held him here all night, like a feedbag!" Diana finished feeding and sighed contentedly. "Should I wheel the bassinet in here for tonight?" Nick asked. "Uh huh, all my babies are staying right here with me tonight. They're not going out of my sight!" Elisha proclaimed.

The next morning they dropped Rebecca and Brian off with Angel so that they could visit the police station. Angel promised them that if they watched TV quietly while she finished studying they would go out for a treat. Rebecca and Brian made a beeline for the set and promptly started loudly arguing about what to watch. "I'll keep the twins too, if you want." Angel offered. "Obviously the studying thing isn't going to work!" Elisha shook her head and Nick laughed. "I think these babies are glued to us now, Angel." "No offense." Elisha apologized. "I just can't bear to let them out of my sight, not after what happened." Angel hugged her and nodded. "I understand completely, don't worry. Now go before they realize you're still here, okay?"

"So I take it there was no sign of Mandy at the motel." Nick said. "Correct." said the sargeant. "We're not sure how long she had been gone. She only left the bag of baby supplies. We got some clean prints off of those items, and we have the managers id. She won't be getting out for a long time." "You have to find her first." It was the first thing Elisha had said since the interview had started. "This monster stole my babies and she's still out there. She took my babies and left them to die in a seedy motel and she's still free!" Her voice was getting high and shrill, Nick placed his arm around her shoulders and rubbed her upper arm. "How are we supposed to sleep at night knowing she's still out there?" Elisha demanded. "We can have a car outside your house, on constant patrol, if you desire." the sargeant offered. Nick looked thoughtful. "We could still go to the Richardson place in Kentucky." he offered. "The guys will understand, they didn't expect me to jump right back into work after all this anyway." "That would be best, actually if you can do it." the sargeant said. "We will keep you informed and let you know as soon as we find her. Elisha nodded reluctantly. "I guess if you think it's best." "The kids will love it, 'Lish. Kevin's always talking about how much fun he had growing up there." Nick enthused. "What about you?" Elisha put her hand on his cheek. "You'll go crazy without your ocean." Nick smiled. "I'm sure there's water somewhere in Kentucky, I'll make do!"
