~~~~Love Above All~~~~
Chapter 11
The manager of the motel was leaning over the counter checking the books. That girl in room 12 was late with her payment this week. She had paid up front for the first week, and now she seemed to have disappeared. He used to see her quite often sitting outside, but for the past couple of days she hadn't been around at all. He straightened up and peered out the window. Her car was gone, but that didn't mean anything. He searched for the key to the room and shoved it into his pocket. "I'll just pay her a little visit." he said to himself, on his way out the door.
Nick and Elisha sat silently watching the television in their basement rec-room. Rebecca and Brian were spending the night at their grandparents to give them a break and some time alone. As the movie droned on in the background, Elisha looked up at Nick. "Do you think we will ever see them again?" Nick hugged her around the shoulders. "Of course we will! I can't see Mandy keeping them for long, she just wants to scare us. She could never stand kids when I knew her." "That's what I'm afraid of Nick, you know what she's done to us." Nick shook his head. "They're alright, I can feel it in my bones. Gene and Diana will be coming home to us." Elisha looked into her husband's eyes. A small smile was playing on his lips, but his eyes were determined. "I just want to kill her Nick." Elisha suddenly confessed. Nick looked at her curiously. "I want to wrap my hands around her neck and choke the life out of her. If she was here in front of me right this moment, I would kill her. Is that wrong, to feel that way?" Nick pulled her close to him. "You're a mother, I think almost anyone would forgive you. I know I wouldn't mind helping you take a round out of her." They cuddled together and turned their eyes back to the TV, but their thoughts were elsewhere.
The manager knocked on the door for the second time. No answer. He pushed the key in the lock and turned the knob. He let his eyes adjust to the dim light. She had cleared out. There was nothing in the room to show that anyone had ever stayed there. "Great!" He slammed his hand on the counter. Stiffed for a weeks worth of rent, just what he needed. The sound of his hand slapping the counter woke the babies and they cried out. The man looked around in confusion for the source of the crying. He finally located the pitiful looking babes in the bathtub. They were laying on a blanket that was sopping wet from the dripping tap. He gathered them up, cursing the bitch that not only stiffed him, but abandoned two babies this way. He held the two shivering children gently and carried them to the office.
The police arrived at the motel quickly. The officers showed the motel manager a photo of Mandy and he told them that the girl looked very similar to the girl in the photo, but older. He was pretty certain it was the same girl. The two babies, who appeared unharmed, were wearing the clothing described in the bulletin. A green sleeper and a pink one. A search of the motel room turned up a bag of baby items, diapers, some formula, bottles. Everything else was clean. The officers called their sargeant to the motel and told him to bring a female escort for the children.
Nick turned from the phone to Elisha. "The sargeant is coming over, he said they have a new developement in the case and need our input." Elisha looked hopeful. "Did he say what kind of developement?" Nick shook his head slowly, recalling the conversation. "No, actually, he didn't say. But he should be here shortly, we'll find out soon enough." Elisha finished putting the videos they had just watched away. "I hope they found the goddam bitch and just leave me with her for two seconds." Nick looked at his wife, surprised. She rarely ever swore, but he could excuse her in this case. He himself had a few stronger choice words for Mandy.
The doorbell sounded and Nick and Elisha stood as one, laughing at their nervousness. Nick opened the door and stood shocked as Elisha let out a wail of joy. The female officer that accompanied the sargeant was holding two wriggling bundles clad in green and pink. Elisha grabbed her two babies and ran to the couch, with Nick right at her heels. The sargeant and the female officer stood to the side and watched the family reunion. Elisha had removed the filthy sleepers and diapers and hugged her babies tight to her chest. They were dirty and skinny, but otherwise looked unharmed. Nick and Elisha had never seen a more beautiful sight in their lives. Nick suddenly realized that the officers were still standing in the doorway. "I don't know what to say. Thank you so much for bringing my children back to me." Tears shone in his eyes as he looked over to his wife and children. "There are somethings we would like to fill you in on, but you and your wife come to the station tomorrow, okay? Enjoy your family." Nick thanked them again and showed them to the door. Elisha had scooped the babies up and taken them into the bathroom to be bathed. "I think they're hungry, sweetie." Nick said, over her shoulder. "Would you be a doll and go get a couple of the bottles of milk I made up out of the freezer? They might have gotten used to a bottle, I hope to God she used a bottle. I have to get her scent off of them. I swear I can smell her." Elisha slipped Diana into the warm, shallow water of the tub. Nick was still standing in the doorway, watching, with a huge smile on his face. "Hurry up!" Elisha giggled. "I'll let you bath Gene, you know you want to!" Nick ran to the kitchen and quickly returned to the bathroom. "Hi there, my beautiful boy!" Nick nuzzled his son close to his face. "I'm so glad you're home."
