Just To See Her

~~~~Chapter 48~~~~
"Oh Kathy, I wish Nick could see you! You look gorgeous!" Lex and Rho gathered around Kathy as she stood before the mirror. "You really think so?" She had chosen a simple white dress, sleeveless and cut just below the knee. Rho pulled Kathy's hair back into a small bun, affixed a small cluster of flowers to it and pulled some tendrils of hair out to fall gently around her face. "Perfect!" Alexa touched up Kathy's makup for her carefully. "I think you are all set." Kathy twisted in front of the mirror. "Everything looks okay?" "Yes!" Both women assured her, jokingly. "I'm so nervous. Is everything ready?" Alexa counted on her fingers. "You and Nick picked up the marriage license, I have the blood tests, you're all ready, all the guys are here, all the families, AJ and Brian are getting Nick ready..." "Hold on!" Kathy put her hand up. "Jane came?" Rho looked at Alexa. "No, she's not here, hun." Kathy shook her head. "I didn't figure she would be." she said, bitterly. "Damn her." Then her face brightened. "Did you say AJ is getting Nick ready?" Alexa nodded. "Go check on them, my husband is not getting married in a leopard print tux!"
"Nick man, stop shaking will you? What are you so worried about?" "Brian, tell this idiot how nerve-wracking getting married is, will you please?" Nick sighed in exasperation. Brian laughed. "Turn around buddy, let's see if you are all done up right here." Nick spun around and the guys grabbed him as he wobbled dangerously near the dresser. "You look ready Nick." Alexa knocked at the door. "Everybody decent?" She walked in and took a deep breath, causing AJ to shoot her a look. "Oh Nick, you look wonderful!" She hugged him tight. "And what about me?" AJ pouted. "How do I look?" Alexa giggled and moved next to him, hugging him and planting a small kiss on his cheek. "You are the best looking guy here." she whispered to him. "But I have to make the groom feel special, don't I?" AJ smiled proudly. "Thanks baby!" She turned her attention back to Nick. He was dressed simply as well, in white, slightly baggy dress pants and a dark green, short sleeve, button up shirt. Alexa grinned when she realized what Nick was wearing on his feet. "Sandals?" "Yes, sandals!" Nick smiled as he wiggled his toes. "Runners didn't look right. Brian said so." "He's right!" Nick shook his arms and nervously ran his fingers through his hair. Alexa handed him his sunglasses. "No." He handed them back to her. "She will want to see my eyes. Is she ready?" "Yup. It's time to go."
The few guests were gathered on the deck that Rho and Alexa had decorated while Kathy and Nick had been out getting the marriage license. Kevin, Howie, AJ and Brian were there, along with Leighanne and Kristen. Nick's family crowded along the railing, Jane conspicious by her absence. Kathy's mother and father were talking to Nick's grandmother, smiling happily. "They're all ready!" Rho announced, taking her place beside Howie. Alexa and Nick appeared on the deck and slowly made their way to the sand below to stand before the minister. Alexa gave Nick a small kiss, wished him luck and went to join AJ. Inside the house, Kathy brushed her hands across the front of her dress and took the small bouquet from the table. "Here we go!" she whispered and started through the door.
Her breath caught in her throat when she saw Nick. He looked so gorgeous standing there waiting. Waiting for her. Tears came to her eyes and she stopped for a moment. Her father took her arm and led her the rest of the way. "Thank you Daddy." she said quietly. "He's a good man, you be good to him." "Oh I will!" she promised. They finally reached the beach and Kathy instantly took Nick's hand. "You look wonderful honey." Nick reached for her face, stroking her cheek softly. "So do you." Kathy couldn't control her tears. The minister smiled and began the ceremony.
"We are gathered here today to celebrate one of life's greatest moments, to give recognition to the worth and beauty of love, and to add our best wishes to the words which shall unite Katherine and Nickolas in marriage."
Nick could hear Kathy quietly sobbing and he brushed away her tears.
"Should there be anyone who has cause why this couple should not be united in marriage, they must speak now or forever hold their piece."
The brief pause seemed to take ages. Kathy fully expected Jane to burst through the door and cause a scene.
"Who is it that brings this woman to this man?"
Kathy's father stepped forward and placed his hands on the couple's already joined hands. "I and her mother do."
The minister nodded as Kathy's father gave her a small kiss and stepped back to the deck with his wife.
"Katherine and Nickolas..."
Just then the sound of the pugs barking hysterically broke the peaceful afternoon. "Stop! Stop the wedding!" Jane appeared around the corner of the house. "Please stop the wedding!"
