Make sacrifices, parents of Down Syndrome children urged

Parents of children with Down Syndrome should make efforts to help them instead of merely relying on the government and institutions, Penang Down Syndrome Association chairman Sharifah Daud-Froelich said yesterday.

She stressed it was important for parents to personally cater to the special needs of these children.

"We should sacrifice our time and energy to educate them if we want them to realise their full potential and to live independently in the future," said Sharifah at the launching of the association.

Present were Penang Municipal Council president Dr Teng Hock Nan, association advisor Dr Sim Joo Seng and organising chairman Selvi Muthayah.

Sharifah said of the 1,000 individuals with the syndrome in the state, only about 137 had joined the association.

She said the association, besides acting as a support group, also linked up with other organisations to create opportunities for the children.

Dr Teng, in his speech, urged the corporate sector, non-governmental organisations or government agencies to set up a special institution to cater to children with Down Syndrome.

The association's website address is http://dsapenang.freeservers.com.
