Boy Scouting Glossary

Assistant Patrol Leader  (APL)� junior leader voted on by the boys in his patrol.  He takes over the patrol leaders job in his absence.

Assistant Scoutmaster � registered adult leader 18 or older that assists the Scoutmaster with the tasks of making the troop run smoothly.

Arrow of Light � the highest award offered in the Cub Scouting Program.  This is the only cub scouting badge that can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform

Board of Review � an interview type meeting between a scout and three adults reviewing him on his past accomplishments and achievements to determine if he has completed the requirements for a particular badge or rank.

Buddy System � part of the boy scouting safety plan that ensures each boy has another person to render aid if the need arises.

Camporee � a weekend of camping with the troops in our local district demonstrating the technique of living in camp.

Campfire � a time of fellowship and recognition during a campout when different patrols or troops may perform skits songs or to give out awards

Chartered Organization � another organization or group that as applied for and received a charter to operate a scouting unit.

Chartered Organization Rep.  � the liaison that works between the scouting unit and the chartered organization.  This person must be a member of the Charter Organization.

Commissioner � a volunteer scouter who works with troops to help them succeed.  There are many levels of commissioners: District, Council, Unit, and Roundtable.

Council � the administrative body that is responsible for the scouting program within a geographic region.  Our council is the Tukabatchee Area Council.

Court of Honor � a recognition ceremony for those scouts that have met the requirements for any badge or award.

Cracker Barrel- A scout term for a gab session and refreshment session after a meting or activity.

District � A geographical entity within a local council, that meets monthly to oversee the operations of local units.

District Executive (DE) � A professional scouter responsible for district (or districts) within a local council.

Eagle Scout � The highest rank in the Boy Scouts of America.

Fast Start � a video training tape for Boy Scout Leaders

Junior Assistant Scoutmaster (JASM) � An older youth who may still be working on rank, that aids the scoutmaster as an assistant.

Junior Leader Training (JLT) � a day long training session for the elected junior leaders of the troop to teach leadership skills needed to make the troop function.
Order of the Arrow (OA) Scouting�s national honor society, the members of which have been chosen by their peers for their scouting spirit and camping ability.

Patrol � a group of 6 to 8 boys who belong to a troop and work together in and out of troop meetings.  There are usually several patrols in one troop.

Patrol Leader (PL) The youth leader of the patrol, elected by its members.

Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) � Each patrol leader, representing his patrol meets with the other patrol leaders and the senior patrol leader to plan their troop program.

Quality Unit Award � Recognition given each charter year to troops that commit to and meet six of 10 national standards pertaining to leader training service, advancement, camping, and membership growth.

Roundtable - A program-planning and moral-building meeting of adult leaders usually held monthly on a district level.

Safe Swim Defense � A plan with eight defenses for safe swimming.

Safety Afloat � Guidelines for safe troop activity afloat in a craft less than 26 feet long.

School Night for Scouting � A one-night event in a neighborhood school where boys and parents gather to hear and see how scouting operates and how they can join.

Scoutmaster � The registered adult leader of a boy scout troop.  This volunteer is the key person in a boy scout troop.
Scout Executive � A full time professional director of a local council.

Scout Week � A week that brackets the birth date of the scout program.  BSA�s is observed in February (Feb. 8) each year.

Scribe � An appointed officer in the patrol who keeps the records of that patrol.

Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) � the elected boy leader who runs the troop  meetings and the patrol leaders council meetings with the guidance of the Scoutmaster.

Tour Permit � Permit designed to assist troops. in a planning safe, healthful, and enjoyable trips and to ensure the proper procedures will be followed in case of emergency.

Troop � The unit that conducts Boy Scouting for the chartered organization.

Troop Committee � the committee appointed by the chartered organization to administer the affairs of the troop.

Troop Scribe � the elected leader of the troop that keeps the records of the troop, and keeps minuets of the PLC meetings.

University of Scouting � a day long training session where adult and junior leaders learn different skills to improve their program.

Venturing � A stand alone program of the BSA for young men and women ages 14-20 who subscribe to the venturing oath and code.

Webelos-to -Scout-Transition � The preparation and graduation of a boy from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting.
