As Tamara turned and saw her mother standing there, her heart fell. She looked for the tell-tale signs..the glassy eyes..the weaving..but she didn't see anything out of the ordinary in her mother's appearance. Immediately her heart lifted and she was glad her mother had come. She was family after all and maybe now, with a new husband and the baby on the way, she and her mother might just draw closer.

When the wedding was over, Tamara and Steven were treated to dinner at a club where toasts were made and best wishes bestowed on them both. As Tamara watched her mother raise her glass to her lips again and again, she realized her dream of a closeness developing between them was merely wishful thinking. They would remain estranged until her mother found a way to place Tamara before her love of liquor. It didn't matter anymore anyway! She had Steven and soon they would have their own little family. She made the vow that her baby would never know the loneliness and frustration that she had known as a child.

Two days later they put her mother on a plane for home and Tamara and Steven settled down to await the forthcoming event. Life was once more on an even keel. Tamara continued working at the library and there were times when she forgot the anxiety and panic she had experienced. Life was wonderful! And should the thought of how she'd cope with a new baby and all the responsibility it involved crossed her mind, she quickly brushed it to one side. Steven was loving and protective. She could overcome any obstacle with him by her side.

Tamara's pregnancy progressed and during one of her monthly check-ups, her doctor informed her that she was having twins. "Twins!" she thought. "Oh my, I wonder how Steven will react to this news?" She was in a daze as she left the office.

She broke the news to Steven that night and once he got over the initial shock, he actually seemed pleased at the idea. He was an also an only child and felt he had missed out on the closeness and sharing he would have been exposed to if he'd had a brother or sister. They both spent the rest of that evening thinking of names to call their babies.

Two healthy boys were delivered by caesarian section after several hours of fruitless labor. As Tamara held them in her arms, a tremendous feeling of love welled up inside her. She vowed to protect them and nurture them with every ounce of her being. She would be the best mother...the very best!
