As Tamara sat in the clinic waiting room, she thought back over the past year. Where had all her dreams flown? What had happened to the eager young woman who had stepped off the plane, ready to set the world on fire? She knew the turning point was when she experienced that first attack of panic, but did everyone who had stress suffer such attacks? Was she all alone in this? Surely there was more to this than just a simple case of stress! And then there were the pills! She knew she was addicted to them. She had tried to cut down on them..even tried giving them up several times but ended up frantically searching for them at the first twinge of fear. She had no answers to the questions she was posing to herself. All she knew was that she was functioning to the best of her ability and that one day she would have the answers and would be free once again. But she knew she would never be free of the guilt if she proceeded with the abortion. She would carry it with her for the rest of her life. She knew she couldn't do it! And as her name was called, Tamara looked at the nurse and said "I've changed my mind!" Then she bolted from the room

She stopped at the little park on her way home and cried as if she'd never stop. All the pent-up emotions of the past year erupted and she cried until she was spent. The evening darkened yet she remained there on the bench. And that's where Steven found her. Sitting beside her, he saw the dried tears on her cheeks and her swollen eyes and said, "What's the matter, sweetheart?" "Oh Steven", cried Tamara, "Hold me...please!" And as he put his arms around her, the words tumbled out of Tamara's mouth. She told him of her fears, how she was trying so hard to be the woman he wanted and how she felt she had failed him. Then she told him about the baby and how very close she had come to having it aborted. "Darling," said Steven, "Why didn't you confide in me sooner? We would have worked something out." Tamara explained that she knew he wasn't ready for marriage...hadn't he told her so? Looking into his eyes, she saw the tears gather and knew at that moment that everything would be all right. Steven would marry her and care of her and the baby.

Tamara and Steven planned a small wedding, issuing invitations to Steven's parents, several of their co-workers and Tamara's mother. She would have preferred to exclude her mother, but knew she couldn't. She was all the family she had. Her one hope was that her mother would stay sober and not embarrass her in front of her guests.

The morning of her wedding day found Tamara waiting at the airport for her mother's plane to arrive. After waiting for more than two hours, Tamara told herself that her mother must have decided not to attend her wedding after all. She left the airport with feelings of both disappointment and relief.

The wedding was held at City Hall and as Steven and Tamara stood before the Justice of the Peace, exchanging their vows, there was a stir at the back of the room. As Tamara turned to see what had caused the stir, she found herself looking into her mother's eyes!
