Tamara waited for Steven to return home so that she could confront him with what she had seen at the restaurant. She visualized the scene over and over again in her mind until she thought she would go mad. Steven was having an affair! Things began to fall into place now. The late hours he had spent supposedly working overtime...the temper flare-ups...his indifference to her needs. She tried to place all the blame on him but she knew how difficult she had been to live with. She knew her constant complaining and clinging had driven him to do what he did. But she couldn't blame herself entirely either. She hadn't asked for the disorder that was tearing them apart. She'd had no one else to turn to but him. And wasn't marriage supposed to be for better or worse?

No matter who was to blame, there were two small children to be considered...two children who needed and depended on them. They would just have to talk this out and try harder to make the marriage work. It wouldn't be easy for Tamara to live with the fact that Steven had turned to someone else but for the childrens' sakes, she would try. "And also for my sake," she thought. "I couldn't cope with being on my own."

Steven was very remorseful when Tamara finished relating what she had witnessed. He had known it was only a matter of time before he was found out. He related to her the events that had led up to his seeing Beth, saying that they were both very vulnerable at the time. "There's nothing I can do about Beth's working at the office," he said. "But I swear I'll have no further outside contact with her."

Steven wasn't being truthful! Things had gone too far for him to give up Beth. He couldn't tell Tamara this. She was doing so well those days, thanks to her psychologist. He had given her hope and the courage that Steven could not. If she kept improving the way she was, it would only be a matter of time before she would be capable of functioning on her own. Then he would ask her for a divorce. His feelings for her had waned long before Beth and all he felt for her now was a sense of duty. He loved his boys but if it meant giving them up for Beth, he would. Besides, he was entitled to visitation rights. He continued to see Beth at work. They got together every chance they could. And today she had told him that she was carrying his child!
