From special prayer services and candlelight vigils to the tolling of church bells and the dedication of monuments, New Jersey is getting ready to observe the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks. These are some of the events being planned by places of worship, towns, community groups, and emergency workers throughout the Garden State. They are listed alphabetically by town. Verona:
Services commemorating Sept. 11 will begin at 7 p.m. on Sept. 8, with "God's Grace at Ground Zero: A Message of Hope," at Calvary Lutheran Church on South Prospect Street. On Sept. 10, a program called "We Remember" will start at 7 p.m. at Congregation Beth Ahm on Grove Avenue.
During the day on Sept. 11, individual houses of worship will be open for prayer and meditation.

The First Congregational Church, on Church Street, will open its doors at 8 a.m.

After the 8 a.m. Mass, there will be Eucharistic adoration and time for quiet prayer at Our Lady of the Lake Church, on Lakeside Avenue, until 5 p.m.

The Church of the Holy Spirit, Gould Street, will be open from 9:30 am.

A prayer service will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church, on Fairview Avenue, at 9:30 am.

At 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, an ecumenical service of readings, prayer and song led by the clergy, music ministers, cantors and combined choirs of the community will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Church.

Warren Twp:
The Chelsea at Warren, an assisted living facility on King George Road, will be lighting candles in the windows of 80 apartments at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. Participants will also sing patriotic songs, recite patriotic poems and collect donations for the Somerset County Food Bank. The event is open to the public.

Alliance Bible Church on Dock Watch Hollow Road will host a remembrance service at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. The evening will include testimony by a man who was inside the Twin Towers when the hijacked planes hit and from a soldier just returning from Afghanistan.

Washington Borough:
The Memorial School will hold a memorial candlelight ceremony on Sept. 11 at 6:30 p.m., on West Stewart Street. Refreshments will follow. For more information or to help volunteer, call (908) 689-7771 or (908) 689-3248.

Saint Joseph Church, at 200 Carlton Ave., will hold a special Mass of Remembrance on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m., followed by the opportunity for private prayer time. For more information, call (908) 689-0058.

Washington Twp.
An inter-faith Service of Light organized by the Long Valley Clergy Association will be held at St. Luke Roman Catholic church, 265 W. Mill Road, on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The service will include police, fire and emergency medical service personnel as well as Washington Township officials. The goal for the service is to bridge participants from mourning to the light of hope for the future. All welcome. For details call Father Michael Drury (908) 876-3515.

West Milford:
The West Milford Presbyterian Church will hold an ecumenical service on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The church is located at 1452 Union Valley Road. For more information, call (973) 728-3081.

Wharton
Candlelight memorial service at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Memorial Park, South Main Street.
