From special prayer services and candlelight vigils to the tolling of church bells and the dedication of monuments, New Jersey is getting ready to observe the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks. These are some of the events being planned by places of worship, towns, community groups, and emergency workers throughout the Garden State. They are listed alphabetically by town. Belleville:
Christ Church, on Washington Avenue, will hold a "Public Service for Remembering" at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. The service is open to all residents of the Belleville area. For more information, call (973) 751-0616.

The Belleville Clergy Alliance is holding a special interfaith remembrance service at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Montgomery Presbyterian Church on Mill Street. A remembrance booklet, "Fallen But Not Forgotten," will be distributed to those who attend and will be available in English, Spanish and Korean. For more information, call (973) 759-1555.

Bernards Twp:
A daylong series of events will begin with a quiet gathering at 7:30 a.m. on the lawn of town hall on Sept. 11. Local congregations will keep their doors open throughout the day, and evening services will be held.

Bernardsville:
A remembrance service will be held at St. Bernards Episcopal Church on Claremont Road at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.

A Community Mass of Remembrance will be held at Saint Bernard's Episcopal Church at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 to mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks and to honor local residents who died in the attacks. The service, open to the public, will include musical performances by the Antioch Choral Ensemble of New York City and St. Bernard's organist Steven R. Lawrence. Bound Brook:
A special Mass is scheduled for 8:15 a.m. on Sept. 11 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on East Second Street. Another memorial prayer service will begin at the church at 10 a.m., with children from the Holy Family Academy participating. For more information, call (732) 356-1151.

The Caldwells:
Local houses of worship will hold a prayer service beginning 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. Later that day, residents will gather in Bonnell Field at James Caldwell High School for an 8:15 p.m. service, which will feature singing, readings, recognition of victims' families and candle-lighting. The Rev. Anthony Randazzo of Notre Dame Church in North Caldwell is coordinating the event.

Carteret:
A section of Carteret Park on Carteret Avenue will be turned into a memorial for three borough natives who died in the terrorist attacks. A piece of debris from the World Trade Center, three trees and three plaques will be dedicated during a 7 p.m. ceremony on Sept. 11. Clergy, firefighters, police officers, veterans groups, borough officials and the high school band and color guard will participate in the program.

Chester:
The sanctuary of Community Presbyterian Church, on Main Street in Chester Borough, will be open all day on Sept. 11 for area residents to pray for those who have lost loved ones and to honor the heroes of the terrorist attacks, both living and dead. At 7:30 p.m., a Special Remembrance Service will honor the memory of the Sept. 11 victims. The Community Presbyterian Church will join other churches in ringing the church bell to mark the moment that each hijacked plane crashed.

Clark:
Local residents will dedicate a park to Port Authority police officer James Nelson on Sept. 11. The event, at the corner of Grand Street and Broadway, will start at 7:30 p.m. Parking will be available at Mother Seton Regional High School on Valley Road. For more information, call (732) 388-3600.

Cranbury:
The Women's Club of Cranbury will be sponsoring a candlelight vigil beginning at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 along Main Street. Church bells will ring throughout the town at 8:46 p.m., 12 hours after the time the first of the Twin Towers was struck a year ago. Those gathered will observe a moment of silence.

Cranford:
The September 11 Memorial in Crane Park will be dedicated at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. Following that ceremony, there will be a candlelight procession to St. Michael's Church on Alden Street for a 7:30 p.m. interdenominational service. For more information, call (908) 276-1586.

A memorial service, to remember the lives lost in the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedy, will be held in the Raritan Road Baptist Church, at 611 Raritan Road, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. For more information, call (908) 272-7088 or send an e-mail to:[email protected]

A special prayer service for victims of Sept. 11 attacks will be held at 7:30 p.m. at St. Mary�s Catholic church, 15 Myers Ave., off Route 46 West, on Sept. 11.

East Brunswick:
The township will unveil a memorial monument, dedicated to victims of the terror attacks, at a 7:30 p.m. ceremony on Sept. 11 at the municipal complex on Ryders Lane. A commemorative program will include a candlelight vigil and tributes by bagpipers and high school chorus members. Also, the East Brunswick Clergy Council invites the community to an "Interfaith Service of Consolation and Healing" on Tuesday, Sept. 10, from 8 to 9 p.m. in St. Bartholomew Church, 460 Ryders Lane.

East Hanover:
On Sept. 11, church bells in East Hanover will ring at the time each of the four planes crashed 8:45 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:43 a.m. and 10 a.m. to remember the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, and the plane crash in Shanksville, Pa.

American Legion Post 421 will hold a memorial ceremony at noon starting a 35-minute ceremony put on by the American Legion James P. Collins Post 421. The Hanover Park High School marching band and color guard will march from the school to D'Ambola Field ( D�Ambola Athletic Field, 97 Mount Pleasant Road) The ceremony will include a flag-lowering, wreath-laying and playing of our National Anthem and Taps.

Elizabeth:
Third-Westminster Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth will commemorate Sept. 11 by lowering its flag to half-staff and joining churches and places of worship across the state in tolling the church bell at the moment each of the four planes crashed. At 7 p.m., a candlelight worship service will be held in the sanctuary.

On the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the people of St. Paul Lutheran Church, at 83 Galloping Hill Road, will pause to remember the events and lives lost on Sept. 11. The public is invited to a prayer service at noon and again at 7:30 p.m.

St. Paul will join Lutheran churches across New Jersey to observe "Public Servant Recognition Sunday" in honor of the professional and volunteer public servants who risked their lives on Sept. 11. Special invitations are extended to local firefighters, rescue squad members, police officers and emergency management team members to attend the worship service and recognition reception.

Flemington:
Hunterdon County invites the community to join in an evening of remembrance and recognition of the Sept. 11 attack on America with a program of patriotic music and a candlelight ceremony. The event will take place in front of the historic Hunterdon County Courthouse on Main Street at 7 p.m. Part of Main Street will be closed, with a shuttle service offered from designated parking areas.

Florham Park:
The College of Saint Elizabeth, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, and the Academy of Saint Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, are holding events Tuesday, Sept. 10, and Wednesday, September 11. All are welcome to these three ecumenical events. Please call the Office of Institutional Advancement at 973-290-4450, if you wish to attend any event, as seating is limited.

On 10 September an outdoor candlelight vigil and Taiz� prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Greek Theatre (if it rains, Saint Joseph Hall, McGuire Lounge). The Rev. Daniel W. Murphy, pastor of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha in Sparta, will reflect on his personal healing journey after the death of his brother, a Cantor Fitzgerald employee, in the World Trade Center attack.

On Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. in Saint Joseph Hall Conference Room, author Christopher de Vinck of Pompton Plains, will share his reflections on the power and ability of the human spirit to triumph over adversity. At 7 p.m., there will be a vespers musical tribute in Holy Family Chapel by chamber musicians, Band du Soleil, there will be reflections by Chrisopher de Vinck, and a reception afterward, in the Sisters of Charity Dining Room, Sisters of Charity Administration Building.

Franklin Twp: (Somerset):
Students from each of the district's eight schools will gather at Franklin High School at noon to attend a musical tribute to the heroes and victims of Sept. 11. The event will also host town council members and other dignitaries. In addition, each school will carry out activities for the day that surround a "message of peace."

Garwood:
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at borough hall on South Avenue. A memorial plaque that will hang on an outside wall of the hall will be dedicated at the service. The borough council is also asking residents to fly American flags and wear red, white and blue on Sept. 11.

Hackettstown:
A memorial service, at which a Sept. 11 memorial will be dedicated, will be held Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at town hall on West Stiger Street.

Hawthorne:
The Hawthorne Christian Academy, at 2000 Route 208, will mark Sept. 11 as "A Day of Remembrance and Patriotism." The day will begin at 8:45 a.m. with an assembly for grades 1 through 12 and musical tributes in the Lower School and the Middle and Upper School. Pastor John Minnema of the Hawthorne Gospel Church will be the main speaker for the event. Congresswoman Marge Roukema will present an American flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol to Martha Jensen, whose husband, Alan, was killed in the World Trade Center attack. The couple's two sons attend the academy. A tree planting ceremony, in memory of Alan Jensen, is scheduled for later in the day.

Highland Park:
The borough is sponsoring a candlelight vigil and memorial service at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10. The events will be held on the high school's football field.

Hoboken:
The Hoboken Clergy Coalition will hold a nondenominational prayer service at 8 a.m. on Pier A off River Street and Newark Avenue, near the Erie-Lackawanna train station, on Sept. 11. The service will end with a moment of silence at 8:50 a.m. to mark the moment the first plane hit the North Tower.

Jersey City:
On Sept. 11, the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra will present a free outdoor performance of Giuseppe Verdi's "Requiem" at 7 p.m. at Liberty State Park.

Lavallette:
The "Lavallette Remembers 9/11" Committee will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Heritage Gazebo on Barnegat Bay in the seashore community. The St. Bonaventure Contemporary Choir will perform, and resident Diane Daniels will sing "The Star Spangled Banner." Mayor Tom Walls will deliver a speech, and two essays written by Lavallette students will be selected and read during the service. A representative for the John Lennon family will also speak during the event. John "Jay" Lennon, a Lavallette property owner and 20-year Port Authority Police officer, was lost in last year's terrorist attacks. For more information, call (732) 793-7143.
