From special prayer services and candlelight vigils to the tolling of church bells and the dedication of monuments, New Jersey is getting ready to observe the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks. These are some of the events being planned by places of worship, towns, community groups, and emergency workers throughout the Garden State. They are listed alphabetically by town. Lebanon Twp:
An interfaith prayer service titled "God Is Our Hope" will be held at 8 p.m. on Sept. 11 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 398 County Road 513 in Lebanon Township. A group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish religious leaders have developed an inclusive prayer service designed to represent the three religions.

Livingston:
"An Evening of Remembrance and Hope" starts at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 at West Essex Baptist Church. This service will commemorate the past and look to the future. Guy Yasika, who was in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, will share his story. Also planned are musical performances. The church is located at 222 Laurel Ave. off Route 280. Mendhams:

Metuchen:
Bishop Paul Bootkoski, the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Metuchen, will be offering a Mass of remembrance at 7 p.m. on Sept. 10 at St. Francis Cathedral on Main Street.

Middletown:
A groundbreaking ceremony for a World Trade Center memorial will be held Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at the corner of Orchard and Church streets. The site is the future home of the town's new cultural arts center and part of the property will be dedicated to a walking path as a memorial to the 36 residents lost on Sept. 11.

Also, a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 26 Leonardville Road, in the New Monmouth section. Many of the 36 people from Middletown who died on Sept. 11 were members of this church. Family members had input into this service, which is open to the public.

Millburn:
On Sept. 10, the Millburn-Short Hills Clergy Association will hold an ecumenical service at 8 p.m. at Christ Church, at 66 Highland Ave. in Short Hills. On Sept. 11, Christ Church will offer the following services: 7:30 a.m., Holy Eucharist; 12:15 p.m., Noonday Prayer service; 8 p.m., Evening Prayer service. Monroe:
The township is holding a community vigil at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Monroe High School on Perrineville Road. A town-sponsored memorial for the victims of the terrorist attacks will be dedicated on Sept. 14 in Prospect Plains Park.

Montclair:
St. John's Episcopal Church (55 Montclair Ave) will open its doors for at 8am for a day of prayer, reflection and remembrance on Sept. 11. The church will be open throughout the day, starting at 8 a.m. Reading material will be available for personal meditation. At 8 p.m., there will be a candlelight service and Holy Eucharist. "Drum for Healing, Drum for Peace," a ceremony of rememberance that will include a drum circle led by Glen Fittin held by Religious Science of Montclair, at the Tulip Springs Picnic Area in the South Mountain Reservation. Participants are invited to bring a drum and a picnic lunch. Suggestion donation is $10 for those 12 years and older. The picnic begins at 2 p.m. on Sept. 8 while the drumming begins at 3 p.m. Email: rsimontclair.org For more information.

Morristown:
The Morris County Board of Freeholders is holding a public vigil on the Morristown Green to remember those killed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Uniformed members of the police, fire and emergency services in full dress uniforms from the county's 39 municipalities will gather at the Morristown Municipal Building at 5 p.m. on Sept. 8 for a procession down South Street to the Green. Services at the Green are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and will include state, county and local officials as well as clergy members. The vigil will include a reading of the names of local residents lost in the attacks accompanied by the ringing of a fire bell for each life taken away.

A special musical concert to pay tribute to America; patriotic music by the Rio Clemente Trio. The College of Saint Elizabeth, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, and the Academy of Saint Elizabeth, at 2 Convent Road, welcome the public to join the campus community on Sept. 10 and Sept. 11, to commemorate the events of Sept. 11.

On Sept. 10, there will be an outdoor candlelight vigil and Taize prayer service at 7:30 p.m. in the Greek Theatre at the College of St. Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road. If it rains, the vigil will take place in Saint Joseph Hall. In the keynote address, "A Reflection on the Healing Journey," the Rev. Daniel W. Murphy, pastor of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Sparta, will reflect on his personal healing journey after the death of his brother, Edward Charles Murphy, in the World Trade Center attack.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, and a 7pm vespers musical tribute in Holy Family Chapel, followed by a reception in the Sisters of Charity Dining Room. Seating is limited. Please call (973) 290-4450 for reservations.

On Wednesday 11 September the college will sponsor a 3 p.m. lecture by award-winning author Christopher de Vinck of Pompton Plains in Saint Joseph Hall Conference Room who will share his reflections on the power and ability of the human spirit to triumph over adversity. Mount Arlington
A candlelight vigil memorial service will be held on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at borough hall, 419 Howard Blvd. The service will include prayer, a soloist, guest speakers and presentation of colors by the Mount Arlington Fire Department. Mount Olive:
A candlelight ceremony is planned for Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. in the Mount Olive Municipal Building courtyard (204 Flanders-Drakestown Road, Budd Lake) "Moving Forward With Hope" will be the theme for the event. Refreshments will be served in the senior center following the ceremony.

Mountain Lakes:
The Evergreen in Mountain Lakes has put together a special show which is a tribute to New York, First performance is a matinee Sept. 11.

Newark:
A special discussion, titled "A Town Meeting in the Garden of Remembrance," will take place Sept. 5, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Newark Museum, 49 Washington St. The event, sponsored by the Newark Museum, the New Jersey Historical Society and the Rutgers Institute on Ethnicity, Culture and the Modern Experience, will address questions about how the tragedy of Sept. 11 has affected our feelings about our community, the nation, the nation's role in the world, and the future. Archbishop John J. Myers of the Newark Archdiocese will be presiding over an interdenominational service at 6 p.m. on Sept. 8 in the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The event is billed as a "prayer service of remembrance, support, healing, reconciliation and hope." For more information, call Brian Forés at (973) 497-4189.

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center has rented out space to St. James AME Church for a remembrance service at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. Leaders from the Jewish, Islamic and Christian faiths have been invited to participate. Tickets, which are free, will be needed for admission and are available at the NJPAC box office, St. James AME Church, St. Matthew AME Church in Orange and Fountain Baptist Church in Summit.

The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Zdenek Macal, will present an outdoor performance of Guiseppe Verdi�s "Requiem" at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at Liberty State Park. The performance also features the Westminster Symphonic Choir. The performance is free, but tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Community Theatrein Morristown, 100 South St.

Newark and New Brunswick:
Ceremonies will be held simultaneously on the Newark, New Brunswick and Camden campuses of Rutgers University at 10 a.m. on Sept. 11 to honor the 37 alumni victims. A memorial tree and stone will be dedicated on each campus, and a proclamation will be read. A candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. on the Newark campus, on the lawn between Woodward Hall and the Talbott Apartments on Bleeker Street.

New Brunswick:
As part of the daylong series of events at Rutgers University, a candlelight procession will take place down College Avenue at 8 p.m. on Sept. 11, led by an ROTC color guard and a Rutgers Police Department bagpiper. A giant "Scarlet Tribute" flag will be draped over the Brower Commons pillars. At 8:30 p.m., the marchers will assemble on the Old Queens lawn, where a short ecumenical program will take place, followed by a moment of silence and the singing of "God Bless America." Also, the Old Queens bell will toll 37 times, once for each alumnus who died in the terrorist attacks.

The city, along with the Elks Lodge in New Brunswick, is holding a memorial service at noon Sept. 11 at Monument Square on Livingston Avenue. Middlesex County officials and local clergy are scheduled to participate in the service.

New Providence:
In honor of the firefighters and police officers who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks, St. Andrew's Church will hold a dedication ceremony on Sept. 8 at 10:15 a.m. The event will recognize local fire, police and rescue personnel as well. In addition, a 9-foot "Tree of Heroes," with 403 hand-crafted department shields bearing the name of each fallen hero, will be unveiled at St. Andrew's Church, at 419 South St. For more information, call the church office at (908) 464-4875.

North Brunswick:
The town's Human Services Division and the Sept. 11 committee is organizing a candlelight vigil in front of North Brunswick High School at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11. The ceremony will be held in the high school auditorium if it is raining. Mayor David Spaulding will open the ceremony, and area clergy and public officials are expected to participate.

Nutley:
A dedication ceremony and candlelight memorial service are planned for Sept. 11. A monument with a plaque will be unveiled at 10 a.m. at town hall. An evening ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in the Park Oval. The candlelight service will feature a guest speaker, a soloist, the Nutley High School Concert Choir and a bagpiper. The names of family members lost in the tragedy will be read during the service. For more information, call (973) 284-4935.

Old Bridge:
Bagpipers and a gospel music choir will open a ceremony that begins at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the Laurence Harbor Waterfront Park off Route 35. Township police, volunteer firefighters, first aid squads, area clergy and local public officials are scheduled to participate in the memorial service along with relatives of some of the 12 Old Bridge residents who died in the World Trade Center attack.

Parsippany
A non-denominational prayer service is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at St. Christopher�s Church, 1050 Littleton Road; Church and fire bells are ringing simultaneously at the time the towers hit.

Peapack-Gladstone:
Apollo Muses in cooperation with St. Luke�s Episcopal Church will present "Remembrance," an interfaith, multi-racial concert, at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11 in Greene Hall. The concert will feature soprano Othalie cq Graham and pianist Luke Housner. Tickets are $35 and benefit the church�s Interfaith Youth Dialogues.

Perth Amboy:
An interfaith service and vigil will be held at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall Circle on High Street on Sept. 11. Local veterans' groups and clergy are to participate.

The Cathedral in Perth Amboy, at 277 Madison Ave., will hold a Remembrance and Resilience Service at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. In addition to remembering the lives and innocence lost, the cathedral will celebrate the resilience of the survivors. The service will include a Sept. 11 litany, a testimony from the wife of Eustace "Rudy" Bacchus, who died at the World Trade Center collapse, and another testimony from Charles Robins, a survivor who just made it out of the Twin Towers. There will be a moment of silence, and each attendee will light a candle for those who were lost. For more information, call (732) 632-8313.

Piscataway:
The community is hosting a memorial service called "Piscataway Remembers" at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the high school stadium. The evening will feature singing by the Community Church Choir, the Cantabile Chamber Choral and the Piscataway High School Choir. Included will be a procession of police, fire and rescue workers. Counseling and open discussions will be available for people of all ages from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sept. 10 and again following the Sept. 11 ceremony. For more information, call (732) 981-0700, Ext. 2024.

Rocky Hill:
Residents are invited to join a Sept. 8 prayer vigil in Panicaro Park, in remembrance of Sept. 11. Residents can bring blankets and chairs to the one-hour vigil, which will start 5 p.m. in the park at Crescent Avenue and Washington Street, said Mayor Brian Nolan. Nolan and other residents will join local priests in prayer. The vigil will be partly devoted to the memory of Bill Fallon, a resident killed in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Somerville:
The Somerset County Board of Freeholders is inviting county residents to attend a candlelight vigil in memory of those who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attack. The freeholders, the Somerville Area Ministerial Association and the county's 16th District legislative delegation are co-hosting the event, which will be held rain or shine on 11 September, starting at 7 p.m. in front of the historic courthouse on East Main Street.

In addition to prayers, a medley of peace-themed songs will be performed by children and teen members of the Villagers Summer Theater Arts Program, and other musical selections will be performed by a pipe band. The courthouse bell will toll 36 times at the start of the candlelight portion of the program, in memory of the Somerset County residents who were lost in the World Trade Center attack.

Local houses of worship are asked to toll their bells in the morning, at the time each hijacked airplane crashed. Guests are asked to bring their own lawn chairs. Somerset Medical Center is donating 1,500 candles. Free parking will be available in the Bernie Field Parking Deck off East High Street, one-half block from the courthouse. South Amboy:
The American Legion Luke A. Lovely Post 62 will hold a memorial service at noon on Sept. 11 at City Hall on Broadway. Mayor Jack O'Leary, members of the police and fire departments, and high school students will be among the participants.

South Brunswick:
All clergy are sponsoring an ecumenical service at the Islamic Center of Central Jersey, on Route 1, at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. Earlier in the day, the South Brunswick Township Council will be planting a tree in memory of those who died last Sept. 11, but a time for that service has not yet been set.

South Plainfield:
The borough plans to hold a candlelight vigil in Spring Lake Park at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11, with borough police, fire and rescue squads and area clergy and public officials participating.

Sparta
A remembrance service will be held 11 Septemebr at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church (The church is at 246 Woodport Road. 973-729-7010) on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

On Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. the church will host a "Hero�s Celebration" service with a litany of thanks. Local firefighters, police and EMTs are invited as special guests. Both services are open to the public.

An evening musical presentation, "Land of the Free," will be featured at the First Presbyterian Church on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The sanctuary will be open the entire day for prayer and reflection.

A special remembrance service will be held at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 246 Woodport Road, on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The solemn prayer service is open to the community.

On Sept. 15, the church will celebrate the heroes from last year's terrorist attacks, at a ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. All local firefighters, police officer, EMS workers and community members are invited. For more information, call (973) 729-9966.

Summit:
A candlelight service will be held Sept. 11 at 6:45 p.m. at the Village Green. The event will be hosted by the Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, pastor of the Unitarian Church. The fire department will sound station bells at 10:05 a.m. and 10:28 a.m., to note the collapse of the South and North Towers of the World Trade Center.

On 11 September, Summit High School will be having a memorial assembly and tree-planting ceremony at 2:15 p.m. on the front lawn of the school.

Sussex County:
A candlelight vigil commemorating the terrorist attacks will be held Sept. 11 at Skylands Park stadium in Frankford. A patriotic red-white-and-blue event, "Colors and Candles," will be held from 7pm to 8:30pm at the ballpark, at the Ross' Corner intersection of Routes 206, 15, and 565.

The program will feature the Franklin Marching Band, a local high school chorus and bagpipe music, as well as several veterans' color-guard units and remembrance tributes to police and firefighters. The event is sponsored by the Sussex County freeholders and county public safety organizations, Clear Channel Radio and Skylands Park.

Union County:
A countywide candlelight vigil is planned in Echo Lake Park, off Route 22 in Mountainside, at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11. Candles will be provided to participants. For more information, call (908) 527-4744.
