Your Guide

Bruce Inglangasuk
Bruce lives in Kaktovik with his 11 year old daughter and is active in monitoring bear activity for workers on the North Slope. He has experience of guiding both wildlife photographers and wildlife filmmakers. Bruce is a native Inupiat Eskimo who has lived in Kaktovik for most of his life, using his skills in subsistence hunting to survive.

An able seaman of 10 years' experience, Bruce owns a boat which he uses for fishing and to travel along the coast of Barter Island and the North Slope as well as into the local lagoons. There are 11 different lagoons spanning 120 miles of coastline, all of which he knows well enough to safely navigate. He can also use his expert knowledge of ice to determine when sea ice is strong enough to support skidoos in winter.

Bruce is experienced at making camp in the wilderness, hunting, fishing, survival skills, speaking Inupiat and the culture of the Inupiat. He is very excited to impart this knowledge to any visitors;  "I will teach them everything I know about how to travel on this land and how to survive".

Bruce values his environment and is looking into ways to reduce his carbon footprint further. He follows traditional hunting techniques which prevent the depletion of natural resources; "I only take what I need; the Inupiat are keepers of the land and the animals". Bruce is proud that he has never had to harm a polar bear; he is a safe pair of hands who you can trust in any situation.

Bruce is very proud of his culture and looks forward to imparting his knowledge and skills to you, should you choose to visit him in Kaktovik.

Trips
Both day trips and longer trips can be arranged, and visitors can either stay in a hotel or go camping in the wilderness with Bruce, who has traditional camping supplies. Trips can be arranged according to the wishes of the client - Bruce is equally happy teaching visitors about his culture as he is showing birdwatchers, whale watchers or other naturalists around his homeland.

Essentially, the details of your trip are up to you - simply contact Bruce to discuss possibilities and to arrange your ideal holiday - whether that be adrenaline fuelled, knowledge-seeking or relaxing.
