General Info

Five wizards were sent to Middle-earth to serve as advisors to oppose evil. A wizard's appearance resembles that of an old man, although they age slowly and are actually physically vigorous. Wizards possess great powers of body and mind. They use staffs as a means to conduct their power and will. Each Wizard has his own color and grade. White being the highest in their order and Grey the next level in power and wisdom. Wizards are forbidden to dominate those in Middle-earth and match Sauron's power. However, Saruman disobeys this rule and joined forces with evil.

Gandalf/Ian

Name:Gandalf the Grey (later White)

DOB:?

Status:Mithrandir

History: Gandalf entered into Middle Earth as one of the Istari, and was deemed the wisest of the order by Galadriel. He has been said to be the person most responsible for Sauron's downfall, laboring nonstop for roughly 2000 years to put an end to his reign. Gandalf was the bearer of Narya, the Ring of Fire, given to him by Cirdan when he arrived in Middle Earth. Gandalf always held Hobbits near to his heart, and he also held their race in high regard. When Bilbo found the Ring, Gandalf immediately suspected that it was the One Ring, but allowed Bilbo to keep it, for he knew Bilbo to be strong, and innocent: plus he knew no safer place for it, and he dare not be tempted with it himself. In the year 3001, Gandalf persuaded Bilbo to leave the Ring to Frodo, and shortly thereafter, Gandalf set in motion the Quest of Mount Doom. Gandalf was one of the most important people at the Council of Elrond, because he alone knew the full history of Sauron and the Ring. Although he fell battling the Balrog in Moria, he was sent back to Middle Earth as Gandalf the White to complete his errand. Aside from aiding Frodo in his journey, Gandalf did many other chief deeds during the War of the Ring, including freeing Theoden from the evil spells of Saruman and Wormtongue, and casting Saruman out and taking over as the head of the White Council. After the War of the Ring Gandalf sailed from the Grey Havens with Elrond, Bilbo, and Frodo. It is believed that he also took his beloved horse, Shadowfax.

Name:Sir Ian Mckellen

DOB:May 25, 1939

Birth Place:Burnley England

History:Ian McKellen is among the most acclaimed actors of his generation, honored with more than forty international awards for his performances on stage and screen. He was born in the industrial north of England on May 25th 1939, the son of a civil engineer. He first acted at school and at Cambridge University where he studied English Literature and appeared in 21 undergraduate productions.

Without any formal dramatic training, he made his professional debut in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry and for three seasons worked his apprenticeship with other regional companies, culminating with the opening of the Nottingham Playhouse, where he was directed by his childhood hero, Sir Tyrone Guthrie. His first London appearance in A Scent of Flowers (1964) won him the Clarence Derwent Award and an invitation from Sir Laurence Olivier to join his new National Theatre Company at the Old Vic Theatre. This was followed by two seasons with the touring Prospect Theatre, storming the 1969 Edinburgh Festival as Shakespeare's Richard II and Marlowe's Edward II. These played for two sell-out seasons in London and were televised. His Hamlet followed and established McKellen as "the leading classical actor of his generation." In 1972, he co-founded the democratically run Actors' Company.

Saruman/Christopher

Name:Saruman the White

DOB:?

Status:The White Wizard

History: Saruman came to Middle Earth as the Chief of the Istari, and was the head of the White Council. But for many years, Saruman concealed his secret desires for power and glory. He desired to have the One Ring, and spent many years building armies, in preparation for war. Saruman despised Gandalf, for I believe he knew who was the more powerful, and he knew he could never sway Gandalf to aid him in his evil plots. Saruman was greatly learned in the lore of the rings, and Sauron's history. He knew that Gandalf knew where the ring lay hidden, and it frustrated him that he could not get the information out of him. Saruman's chief power was his voice, to a unaware listener, it sounded sweeter than elvish singing, and he could persuade nearly anyone to do his bidding. In 2953, Saruman took the tower of Orthanc for his fortress, here he began to build his evil armies, and it was his own forces which did damage to Fangorn Forest, and caused his downfall. About 3000 TA, Saruman used the palantir of Orthanc, and was trapped by Sauron, after which, though he thought himself to be free, he was controlled by the Dark Tower. In the year 3010, he sent his servant, Grima, to Theoden. Grima managed to wither Theoden into an early dotage, until he was revived by Gandalf in 3019. Saruman brought about his own destruction by not minding what his armies did to the Fangorn Forest, and forgetting about the Ents. During the War of the Ring, the Ents took revenge upon Isengard, and held Saruman captive in his own fortress, until the king was recrowned, then Treebeard, thinking Saruman was now harmless, allowed him to surrender the keys of Orthanc and flee. Saruman had long had secret dealings in the Shire, and headed there almost immediately, and set to work his last evil plot. Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry deeply regretted tarrying on the way home once they got there. They found walls, and machines, and gates, and rules. All things that were never found in the Shire when they departed. They soon got roused the spirits of the unhappy hobbits, and caused quite an uprising, and caused all the ruffians to flee. Without his henchmen, Saruman didn't have a leg to stand on, and was ready to depart the Shire; but not without one last strike. Saruman attempted to stab Frodo with a concealed dagger, which just glanced off Frodo's armor. Frodo was still willing to let him leave unharmed, but Saruman's poor, long tortured servant, Grima, had different ideas. Grima sprang on Saruman and sliced his throat, and was struck dead by the surrounding hobbit archers. Saruman's spirit rose from his body like smoke from a fire, looked toward the West, wavered, and dissapeared with the wind.

Name:Christopher Frank Carandini Lee

DOB:May 27 1922

Birth Place:London England

Family:Wife(Birgit Kroencke), Child(Christina).

History:Having appeared in some two hundred and fifty-five films and televisions productions, Lee has the distinction of being listed in The Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats as the international star with the most screen credits. Numbered among those credits are the sinister roles which Lee created for Hammer, the British production company which in the 1950s revived the public's fascination with 'horror movies. In playing both Frankenstein's 'Creature' and Dracula, Lee became the successor to 30s movie leends Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi.

Although best-known for his horror roles - Christopher Lee also portrayed Rasputin, Fu Manchu and the Mummy - he has played a diversity of roles in many languages (among them English, Russian, rench and Italian): he was Conan Doyle's faamous detective in the German-made picture, Sherlock Holmes and the Deadly Necklace, and later played Holmes' brother, Mycroft, in Billy Wilder's The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes.

Among Lee's 'rogues gallery' are the Marquis St Evremonde in A Tale of TWo Cities and Rochefort in the 70s production of The Three (and Four) Musketeers. He was also Lord Summerisle, the leader of the pagan cult, in The Wicker Man; Dr Catheter, the medical genius behind the Splice of Life laboratory responsible for the 'new batch' of nasties let loose in Gremlins II; and the evil Francisco Scaramanga, James Bond's title-opponent in The Man with the Goldun Gun.

Christopher Lee continues to demonstrate his extraordinary versatility in the film roles that rane from his inter-galactic apppearance as Count Dooku /Darth Tyranus in Star Wars: Episode II to his portrayal of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, the founder of modern Pakistan, in the 1998 film Jinnah.
