Ocean and The Waves

"Once a salt doll went to measure the depth of the ocean. It wanted to tell others how deep the water was. But this it could never do, for no sooner did it get into the water than it melted. Now who was there to report the ocean's depth?" Sri Ramakrishna

"There is, as it were, an infinite ocean behind, and you and I are so many waves, coming out of that infinite ocean; and each one of us is trying his best to manifest that infinite outside." Swami Vivekananda

In course of human spiritual history many spiritual scientists are produced. The Spirit Itself takes birth in various forms to teach the masses the true basis and science of spirituality. The occasional giant scientists are the 'oceans' of knowledge. A few of their companions and followers are like 'salt dolls' originating from the same source of 'oceanic salt'. However, they are not of minor significance, as only these 'salt dolls' are fit to fathom the depths of the 'ocean' and are instrumental in making the masses aware of the strength and depth of the same.

Apparently, in venturing to fathom the depth and secrets of the 'ocean' these 'dolls' fast dissolve out in its huge waters. But in fact they become one with the ocean losing their 'doll' identity. The beauty and grace of the 'ocean' is such that it throws these 'dolls' up again in the form of 'waves'. The common man understands the reality of the 'ocean' through these 'waves'. It is beyond the capacity of everyone to know the vastness of the ocean otherwise.

The 'waves' take various forms and shapes. Some are small, serene, and die out soon. A few are giant waves of strength; roaring, terrifying, and rushing from a huge distance over a long period of time. They dash against the shore of ignorance and superstitions thereby clearing the way for construction of a new structure of wisdom.

Sri Krishna, Lord Buddha, Jesus Christ, Sri Ramakrishna, and a few others are the 'oceans', and their disciples after merging with these 'oceans' roar up again as huge 'waves'. Swami Vivekananda is such a wave that is still roaring, still rising and will continue to rise for fifteen hundred years for the spiritual growth of man kind!

We can also become a 'wave' of truth. First, through spiritual disciplines, we will have to become 'salt dolls', i.e. we will have to constitute ourselves in the same ingredients as the great 'oceans' are made up of. Then as 'salt dolls' we will have to merge (lose our ego) with the 'ocean'. His grace will throw us up as minor or major 'wave' to spread His message, to sing His glory, and to cooperate with scientists of reason to evolve the basis for unified universal solidarity. Some 'waves' will represent the mysticism of Church, others would dwell in the silence of samadhi.

Some of the 'salt dolls' will have to repeat the attempt to become proper 'waves' for they could not go beyond the formation of bubbles. Some 'waves' will try to defy the oceanic control making them rise in rage, causing destruction through cyclones of sense pleasures. Like savage and untamed horses these 'waves' would revolt against the spiritual foundations. This perpetual oceanic grandeur will continue to baffle and dazzle the humanity through ages, eternally, from one cycle to the next.
