2002 Outdoor Track Previews
Southwest Region - Dayton
If you are looking for anything about the Hilliard District, pleas go to the Northwest preview.  Thanks to our buddies at the OHSAA we don't know where the schools in the Columbus District are trying to qualify too and we won't know until May 13.  Gotta love it.
In the 4x800 Dayton Oakwood is the top returning school with a 13th place finish last year in 10:17.  They are all juniors on the team this year and have a team PR of 9:55.  I would expect them to improve and they have experience now too.  Indian Lake behind freshman Brittany Tinsley and talented upper classmen should field a good team.  Wyoming is also young and deep led by freshman Erika Schmitt.  Indian Hill, victims of a stacked regional in XC should also field a tough 4x800 behind standout LIsa Uible.  Hamilton Badin and North Bend Taylor could contend as well.
In the 800, outside of Copeland, Julie Hoekzema of Badin becomes the top returner at 2:21 with Springfield Shawnee's Ashley Vannatta right there too.  This is a very big open event in the Southwest so look for some surprises.
In the 1600, Courtney Engel of Reading went 5:13 at Regionals before slowing to 5:23 at State and Uible went 5:14 before slowing to 5:35 at State.  Hopefully they have both learned from last year and will do considerably better this season.  Outside of them, look to the freshman, Tinsley and Schmitt to contend.  Caitlyn Frey of Wyoming could be a factor as well.
The 3200 brings Megan Via of Brookville into the frey.  She ran 11:33 to grab 7th last year at state.  Carrie Crofford of Taylor ran 11:36 at regionals only to slow to 12:02 at state to just edge Uible who slowed from 11:32 to 12:02 as well.  Once agian, look for the freshman to be a factor as well as whichever Columbus runners head this way.
One thing that is shocking about this region is it is so young and I cannot even began to explain why they run so much faster at regionals than at state when runners with Uible's talent shoud not have to race all out to make it to state to begin with.  Who know's maybe a flu hit the entirety of Southwest Ohio last year.  Let's just hope it misses this year.
