Catspaw & Beggars Tomb RR
(On3)

Work on this version of the C&BTRR started in November, 1997. The C&BTRR serves the lumber holdings of the Catspaw Lumber Co. and hauls ore & concentrates from the Beggars Tomb Mine. Located in the Southern Colorado mountains, the C&BTRR owns several cast-off D&RGW locomotives and leases most of its rolling stock.

I want to complete some very basic scenery on each section before moving on to the next. This should keep unfinished benchwork in the living room to a minimum.

The first section of the C&BTRR is in a 10" X 3.5" area and the low spot is 36". I am using L-Girder benchwork anchored to the back wall. Track is all hand laid using code 70 rail. Turnouts are hand thrown stub switches built in-place. Power is supplied from my home built DCC system for the 13 ton shay and diesel. I use an MRC 1500 power pack when using locos without DCC decoders.

Scenery is made from stacked blue foam slabs covered in plaster. I like the blue foam a lot more than the wire screen I used to use. Ground cover is decomposed granite from my yard and colored ground foam. I added a cat-proof shield to the layout when the scenery went in. I routed out slots in the benchwork legs and used fluorescent light fixture lenses. They are lightweight, cheap, and keep Neko out.

The photos show the progress between November, 1997 and April, 1998. Not much has changed since April.
