August 8:

Chief-of-Police, Anthony Murphy attended our meeting to address a serious problem currently in our neighborhood: Gunshots.
Much discussion ensued as residents recalled hearing gunshots by speeding cars in the early morning hours for the past couple weeks. Two homes were shot at, no one injuried.

Following this discussion were other areas of concern:
Street lights and Tree-trimming: Need of services on 17th Street to help deter unwanted visitors, loitering minors, etc.

Cars racing up and down the streets;

Current police staffing situation: More hires, some reprimands, demotions and terminations. Changes are happening.

Residents can be cited: Recent ordinance passed - Those who drink (alcoholic beverages) and become a nusiance in neighborhood can be cited on their property.

Drugs being sold on 16th Place across from Wilson Elementary School - most drug dealers are from other communities

Scooters/ATVs riders: Creating hazard by  riding through stop signs.

Housing problems: Followed up housing problems with Don Garcia, Director of Code  Enforcement. Sgt. Basile working with Tenants & Landlords.

Kids (minors) running amuck:
Kids out in middle of streets blocking vehicle passage; loitering in other residents' property, lighting fires in streets, and more, continue to create problems for residents. Parents/Guardians must be held accountable.

Curfew for minors are now:
Sunday - Thursday: 10pm
  Friday - Saturday:  11pm

Scooters/ATVs: still a problem. Residents are advised to call the police.

Tree-trimming and Street-lights:
17th Street residents, again, brought up this subject, stating that if the city would trim the trees on their street, there would be more light shining at night to help deter unwanted visitors;
A 17th Street resident said after the last meeting, the city finally came out and trimmed the trees in front of her house, due to Chief Murphy's follow through. However, the city did not trim the other trees on the street.

Sidewalks: Need of repairs on 17th Street sidewalks.

Nursing home on 16th Place: will be shut down due to constant drug problems created in area.

Police Staffing: 10 new officers will be added and 4-man task force.

City street-cleaners: Clean streets 1x/mo.

Hurricane Katrine Assistance: Our neighborhood watch group wants to gather donations for individuals who will be arriving from the Gulf state to Chicago Heights. More info to be gathered.

Annual Neighborhood Watch Holiday Dinner: Discuss next meeting.
