CURRENT NEWS
(cont'd)

353 W 16th Street - House owner's neglect of upkeep of house unsightly. Many problems from overgrown grass to house deterioration. City looking after.

"Candy House" - little if no activity recently. Chief Murphy said to call if it picks up again.

D.A.R.E. - programs have been cancelled in most school districts. Per the Chief, he says it's not working, but G.R.E.A.T. is and that program will continue.

School programs
- discussions on budget cuts,  teacher jobs & pay, the "No Child Left Behind" program & it's unfair assessment of the success of our schools.

The Star Newspaper
- continual disappointment of the unfairness of how they report and the negative impact they are giving to readers and potential residents about Chicago Heights.

Overall, it's been a rather quite summer. The recent rains have kept the kids off the streets.

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY - SEPT. 8, 6:30PM
Aug 11 Meeting

In attendance were Block Captains GiGi & Clar Monaco, Rich & Deb Hummel, Co-Block Captain Greg Matthias, Chicago Heights Chief-of-Police Anthony Murphy and Community Police Center's Paula Wakefield, and new member & Deer Creek elder Rich Gereg.

Topics of discussion:

New Resident & Member - Welcome Rich Gereg, elder of Deer Creek Christian Church. He bought the house next to the church.

Flyers - not everyone received it.

Committees - there are residents in charge of certain responsibilities. There is  need for involvement so not all the work falls on the block captain(s).

Ward Meetings - proving to be good. Only negative is not enough time to hear all attending.

Mopeds - are illegal on streets if not licensed. Police will ticket rider & confiscate vehicle. If you see where they go or live, call police. Riders, most young, underage disobey and disregard stops & safety rules. Many continually beep their horns which has become very annoying to residents.

September Awareness Event - discussion from last meeting to be held on 17th Street. Suggestion to have new participants to coordinate next event.

Aunt Martha's - has quieted down since they moved in last year

Cars with loud booming music -. Chief Murphy said if possible, get license and report it.
