Report on the Religious Minorities in Pakistan


Dr. Mujib–ur–Rehman - Sanghar
On May 7, 2006 at Sanghar-Sindh, Dr. Mujib-ur-Rehman Pasha was shot dead out side his clinic by a masked armed assailant. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Romail - Sheikhupura
On February 6, 2006 Romail (15) son of Pastor Joel Raja of Sheikhupura was gunned down by his Muslim class fellow Umar Iqbal (16) on refusal to join a crime.

Umar had been forcing Romail for few days to accompany him in the crime of robbery and also threatened him that if he would not join him he will be killed. Romail informed his parents about the threats. On the day of incident he went to school with his uncles Nathaniel Barkat and Hameed Sadiq to complain to his teacher. On entering the classroom he was shot at by Umar. Romail was taken to the hospital where he passed away.

An FIR was registered the accused was arrested and sent to the jail. The case is pending before the court.                                                                                                                         NCJP report


Ashraf Sadiq - Sheikhupura

On June 20, 2006 Muhammad Shafaqat gunned down Ashraf Sadiq a Christian of Sheikhupura.

A dispute started between them when Shafaqat teased some Christian girls. Shamim niece of Ashraf Masih was one of them. She informed her family about the incident. On this Ashraf accompanied with few elders of the community went to Shafaqat’s house to bring the matter to the knowledge of his family.

In reaction Shafaqat with his accomplice came to Ashraf’s house, called him outside, when his two elder brothers Tariq Masih and Khalid Masih came out he shot at Khalid who remained unhurt by chance. Then he shot at Ashraf who died at the spot. An FIR was registered and the assailants were arrested. Ashraf’s family pressurized through some influential people for compromise but the family of victim did not agree till this report.                                              NCJP report



Ashraf - A life lost to ignorance

Ms. Naseem Gill - Lahore
On June 19, 2006 former candidate for the minorities’ seat of provincial assembly, Ms. Naseem Gill (57) was found murdered at her residence in Iqbal Town Lahore. The police registered a case.

Shamaun Masih - Lahore
On April 16, 2006 unknown persons gunned down Shamaun Masih a laborer at vegetable market.

Munir Sultan - Lahore
On July 2, 2006 Munir Sultan (22) a Christian was gunned down by Haider Shah, Zafar and Ati.Deceased’s father told that three accused exchanged harsh words with his son over a trifling matter some hours before his murder.                                                                    Daily Dawn July 3, 2006

Former Federal Minister 
Mr. Derick Cyprian, a Christian Federal Minister in General Musharaf’s first Cabinet (1999) was apparently abducted for ransom and latter murdered on August 9, 2006. Former police inspector Ali Imran Niazi, ex bank manager Hamaun Nabeel and Adnan Bashir were indicted in the case. However the family was suspicious about a just outcome of the case, therefore they reportedly compromised.                                                                      NCJP - The News September 10, 2006

Mansha Masih - Kasur
Rashid of Kasur murdered Mansha Masih, a Christian. He was sentenced to death by the Sessions Court. The convict filed an appeal at High Court against the decision of session court. His punishment was commuted to life imprisonment on account of his age, he was 18 years old when the crime was committed.                                                                                Daily Pakistan November 16, 2006

Nadeem Masih - Jamshoro
On December 25, 2006 (6:00 a.m.) Nadeem Masih, a Christian employee of Karim Cotton Mill at Kotri resident of Sikanderabad district Jamshoro was called by Mr. Anwar Sheikh, the supervisor to the factory to receive his salary in advance. When Nadeem arrived there Anwar accompanied his brothers and nephews tortured him.

Within few hours Nadeem’s family was informed by the factory administration that he had committed suicide. His body was taken to the hospital, where the administration of the factory did not allow the post mortem and suggested that the body should be buried. However victim’s family managed to have the postmortem from Civil Hospital Hyderabad, which proved that he died due to torture. FIR was registered at Kotri police station, brothers and nephews of the culprit were arrested but he was at large till this report.                                                                                                             NCJP report
