John Chaloupka Sr. Family
John Chaloupka Sr. was born in Castolovice, Hradec Kralove, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) 7 October 1811. He met and married Catherine Pirko/Pirkova presumably in or near the village of Castolovice 2 February 1834 . Together, the couple had 11 children (2 were born in Iowa and two boys died in infancy). For reasons yet unknown, the couple emigrated to the United States on a steamer bound for the port of Quebec. They took smaller vessels down the St. Lawrence and through the Great Lakes system to Chicago and then made their way to Jackson County, Iowa. By February of 1856, John had purchased a combined 80 acres of land in sections 2 and 7 of Monmouth Township, Jackson County, Iowa. The sections highlighted below in yellow are approximate locations of the 80 acres purchased according to the deeds. The 1860 Federal Census for Jackson County Iowa shows John and Catherine still in Monmouth Township with their children: Jos, age 18; Anton, age 14; Mary, age 12; Anna, age 7; Jas age 2; and Francis age 3 months. It shows the birth place for the youngest two children as Iowa and Bohemia for the other children. Their two oldest sons, John and Frank show up in the nearby household of Diedric Sieben as farm laborers. I have not been able to locate their other son Charles on the 1860 census. He would have been about 16 in 1860. By 1862, John and Catherine had sold their property in Jackson County and were living in neighboring Jones County, as evidenced by the deed of sale for the property in Jackson County. They lived out the rest of their days in Jones County. Catherine passed away 30 May 1895 (obituary) and was buried in Wyoming Cemetery, Madison Township, Jones County, Iowa (death record). John passed away 11 years later on 15 January 1906 (obituary) and was also buried in Wyoming Cemetery, Madison Township, Jones County, Iowa (tombstone photos). Children of John and Catherine:
