300 Children of Color (Spring: 3) Prerequisite: PS 260 Enrollment
will be restricted to juniors, seniors and This class will focus
on the development of children of color. We will examine children of color
primarily in the United States, including African American, Asian American,
Hispanic and Native American groups. We will also review available research
on children of color in other countries. We will cover children's lives
from conception through adolescence, with an emphasis on ethnicity and
related status variables, such as socioeconomic status and gender, as
important contexts for children's growth and development. This class will
provide an exploration of the commonalities and differences among children's
lives across a broad range of social settings. Diane Scott-Jones Prerequisite: ps 254 or 260 Enrollment
will be restricted to juniors, seniors and Knowledge of human development
can inform social policy. The social policies of our nation profoundly
influence the developmental contexts individuals experience. This course
is an exploration of selected topics that have both a human development
and a social policy component. We will begin with a general discussion
of the interrelationships between social policy and theories and research
in human development. We will then cover six major areas: family structure;
education and the structure of schools; mass media; computer technologies;
reproductive technologies; and eating and nutrition. For each topic, we
will examine both relevant research and current policies. Diane Scott-Jones |
