Physical Description: Malina is an impressive woman, standing at 5'11", buxom and muscular. Shes a big boned woman, with wide hips, strong legs, and wide shoulders, with large hands and feet and a ramrod straight posture. Unfortunately, shes not very attractive, with a strong, square, lightly acne scarred face, washed-out and narrow hazel eyes, thin brows, and mousy brown hair that she wears in an unflattering bun at the nape of her neck to keep it out of the way. It falls to mid back when loose. Her nose is large and sharp, and her wide, thin lipped mouth looks bloodless, giving her a harsh aspect. Her voice is surprisingly sweet, however, often startling folk when she first meets them. Her clothing is geared toward comfort, and her prime concern is to look fitting for her rank.
Personality: Shes intelligent, hard-working, and resilient. Malina possesses a nimble mind and a love of precision that leads to a tendency toward fussiness and impatience with fools or flatterers. She knows she's no beauty, and one thing that will end any friendliness towards someone is a compliment on her looks, or willful incompetence on their part. Her temper is slow, but volcanic when it is aroused, and she treasures a grudge when she feels slighted. She possesses a large dose of common sense, and a pragmatic outlook that enables her to deal firmly, but fairly with most people. Malina deals well with riders in general in that respect, and is quite non-judgmental if they are doing their duties well. She doesn't mind the hidework and labor that goes with riding gold. To her, that's the enjoyable part of the job, it's the social, public side that troubles her.
She is one of those people who are most comfortable in a work situation, rather than a social one, though she does her best to be open and approachable to her riders with mixed results. Malina is more respected than loved by her riders; she leads by dedicated example, and lacks the flair and magnetism of W'kel. Shes popular with the Crafters and the Lower Caverns staff for her diligence and fairness; they know they are viewed as just as important as any rider and their problems are handled promptly. Those few in the Weyr she views as friends find her a strong, steady, and loyal one with a rare, but melodic laugh. Shes quite devoted to Wkel, what was a close friendship has become a love match. She offers advice only when it comes to Wkels end of the Weyrleadership, and is pleased to have it in return. Its only when she acts as Wingleader of her Eclipse Wing does that change at all, she accepts his orders and reports to him as any other Wingleader in Wing matters.
Habits: A born perfectionist, she uses very precise language, and hates contractions. She has a fondness for the wines of her native Tillek. Likes everything in its place, and often rearranges things to be orderly and aligned. Workaholic. Malina also snores slightly and cant tell jokes well. Adores ocean themes in decoration, and the colors brown, yellow, and cream. Shes a more distant parent than Wkel, she sees the children less, but is scrupulous in overseeing their education and upbringing through the crche workers. Malina has a golden dragon pendant shaded to resemble Quilth with sapphire eyes she wears most of the time. It was a gift from her parents upon graduation from Weyrling training.
Hobbies: She actually finds paperwork restful and a relaxing way to spend time. She frequently creates files and overviews of possible situations during her off hours, and hands them out as needed. Malina enjoys walking with Wkel, more for spending time together than the weather though. Collects scrimshaw carvings, plays chess, and enjoys trying whatever Wkels whipped up when he cooks and spicy food.
History: Malina was born to a respectable Weavercraft family at Tillek Hold. Raised well but strictly, and taught early on that hard work wouldn't go away by wishing, she learned self-reliance and responsibility early. A disappointment to her parents, who had hoped for a graceful, lovely girlchild, they were at a loss when they got Malina. Though her parents wouldnt tolerate it in their presence, something shes grateful for to this day, she was often picked on and teased unmercifully by her siblings and the other children for being awkward, rawboned and plain when her parents were frequently busy. Malina was smart enough to realize she couldn't change her looks, but could make herself useful and do something with her life rather than working on becoming unlikely marriage fodder. However, she had no love for weaving, hating the repetitive labor of it. Instead, she was apprenticed to the Seacraft, and discovered a love of the open sea and sailing. She was valued as a strong hand and a steady pilot, and had the novel experience of honest respect from her peers. She harbored insecurities though, and made few friends during her apprenticeship, keeping others at a distance. She hoped to one day become a shipmaster, but was to her amazement searched for Fort Weyr at the age of 19 to stand for a golden egg.
She came to Fort, but she assumed she would not Impress. To her complete unsurprise, she was left standing. However, Northern Barrier Weyr needed candidates for a large clutch hatching soon, and she was offered a chance to go by Fort's Candidate master. She was stunned when the golden occupant waddled out and promptly selected her as her rider. Her new Weyrwoman worked her hard, telling her flatly she wasnt her idea of a queenrider, but Malina took to administration like a duck to water. The goldrider missed the ocean, but loved the work, and had Quilth. She soon graduated as junior queenrider, and slowly ascended the ranks, becoming the person most often turned to when something needed done. In time, she was gradually groomed to take a senior post, serving as Second by the time Wkel transferred in eight turns ago.
The Istan soon became a friend, she thought there was a chance for more, but Jolane also wanted him, and she couldnt compete with the pretty Queenrider. Until a turn later, when the Weyrwomanship came open. Quilths rising meant she was now Weyrwoman, and Malina, along with the rest of the Weyr, hoped to have a sound rider as Weyrleader. To her astonishment, Wkels Jeklenth won, and she was well pleased, having no expectations other than a good working relationship. The fine clutch and Hatching of a queen egg brought golden Eanith into the world, and with it, his admission he cared for her, and wanted to start a family. Soon enough, they did, as Weyrleader became Weyrmate, to Jolanes annoyance. Now, three children and seven turns later, she and her Second, while she likes the manner in which she carries out her duties, cant get around Wkel yet, and young Doranna is often stuck in the middle. She cant forgive her Second for continuing to try and steal her bronzerider. Even so, she keeps Jolane at the Weyr, good Seconds simply cant be found easily, and the Weyr comes first. Now, she and Wkel are still going strong, Quilth refuses to allow any other bronze to catch her, and together they lead the Weyr through Pass.
Dragon Info:
Name: Quilth
Age: 16
Color: Gold
Physical Description: Quilth is a large gold, with very broad wings and a long tail for her size and has a strong, muscular build. In color, she is a clear, medium gold that lightens to a pale metallic cream on her underbelly and wingsails. A pale ring patch circles her neck, giving her the appearance of wearing a necklace.
Personality: Quilth is the antithisis of the harsh, domineering Gold. Shes unambitious as far as Golds go, but won't back down when her authority is called upon. A genial senior, she doesnt throw her weight around as much as some, and is fairly popular among her dragons. Quilth generally is a diplomat and very friendly and approachable, a kind and open opposite of her formal and reserved rider. Oddly, she has great difficulty understanding Fire Lizards. She once was very choosy during flights, rarely permitting the same male to catch her twice. Now though, shes only flown by her mate Jeklenth, and shows no signs of changing that. Not very broody once she lays, she has no problems with candidates viewing her eggs as long as she is present.
